Tamron 150-600 G2 Compatible With Nikon TC's?

While impatiently awaiting a D850, I'm looking at lens choices. The new Tamron 150-600mm G2 looks like a good candidate but I only see reviews mentioning the Tamron 1.4X and 2X teleconverters. Does this mean Nikon TC's are not compatible?

Nikon TCs are ONLY mountable on Nikon own compatible lenses, will not even mount on other brands. Will also not even mount on non-compatible Nikon lenses. Nikon uses a keyed bayonet slot lockout to keep their TCs from mounting on any non compatible lens to avoid interference fit with the lens' rear element which can cause damage to that element due to its protrusion behind the lens mount. Nikon TCs have a front element that projects forward beyond the lens mount and needs sufficient clear space inside the rear of the lens to avoid that contact.

Thanks, MT. As good fortune would have it, I just called my local retailer (Pro Photo, Portland). The D850 has been on the shelf long enough that they have a demo model and they also have a demo model of the Tamron G2. I'll have to get off my butt and go for a test drive. I'll also take a solid tripod (with Nest gimbal, of course) and a Nikon 400mm f/2 for comparison.

They've done this for me before - leave my driver's license at the counter and go outside for test shots. And that's why I still spend thousands at this REAL camera store. :)

Got the same demo setup here, makes sales better, IF I could get more D850's!

How many stops of light to you trade off for a teleconverter? I am considering the Tamron 70 - 200 and the 2x tele.

You've brought up a controversial question.

Traditional wisdom is that you lose 2 stops with a 2X, 1 1/2 stops with a 1.7X and 1 stop with a 1.4X TC.

If that's the f/2.8 Tamron, not a problem, except for the very shallow depth of field. I prefer to stop down to at least 5.6 or f/8, tripling the DOF and still getting creamy background. There's more concern about loss of image quality with a 2X, with estimates ranging from 25 to 40%. I've concluded that if I need the extra reach, I do better with a 1.4 TC and cropping. YMMV.

I have a Tamron 150-600 OS (the version prior to the G2), a Nikon d7200 and a Nikon 2x TC 201 and it works fine. I lose AF of course but manual works fine. No interference problems at all. Go figure...............

Manual focus only. With targets 100 feet or more away, I need AF that's better than my old eyeballs. : )

That depends, which Nikon TC's you have
I don't know Tamron's, but I've modified my TC-20Eii to fit on Sigma 150 600 Sport, but I d'ont like the results.

Thanks, Zundapp. I try to go no further than a 1.4X TC. And honestly, I've tried TC's with a D800 and didn't like the results.

OddJobber,

I own and have used the Tamron 150-600 on my Nikon D810. In addition, I used a Vivitar Series 1 2XMC4 AF converter with that camera and lens combination quite effectively. I understand your concern in that I did try to use a Nikon teleconverter with that lens and only after the fact found that it would NOT work with the Tamron lens. That said, the teleconverter noted above works fine with that lens. Best wishes...
