Dark prints from iP8720

Settings for Photoshop to manage color
Profile is set for iP8729
Normal printing
Absolute colorimetic
Cannon matt or semi-gloss paper
Computer screen is calibrated.

The pictures print out too dark and I usually have to go in and add about 60 units of brightness to get a suitable print. Matter of fact instead of printing that dark print I just automatically add 60 units of brightness before I start.

Any suggestions other than just winging it?
Thanks

What ICC profile are you using?

I selected the canon 8700 series for fine art paper.

So you haven't chosen an ICC profile? Telling the printer you have fine art paper is OK but you need to tell the printer how to lay down the ink and that is done with an ICC profile for the paper you are using. As an example, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag ICC profile.

I also am wondering if you have both the printer and software trying to adjust color. If so you really need to turn off the printer adjusting colors and assign it to the software only.

Yes, I've turned off the printer adjustments and specified that color is managed by Photoshop. I've also gone the other way and turned off the software and let the printer manage the color. Same results. Using Canon paper and Canon ink. I'll go to the Canon site and see if they list the ICC profile. I read about such a thing but bypassed that feature.
Thanks for the response.

So this is what I found on the Canon site: Profiles for Canon paper are installed when you install the printer driver on your computer. The profiles are specific to images created in Adobe RGB color space (as opposed to the standard sRGB), Canon paper and Canon ink. By viewing these profiles using an application that supports ICC color profiles (like Adobe Photoshop), the profile information will be read, and the names will appear in a more usable format.
I have updated the printer drivers several times so it would seem that the ICC profiles are installed and accessed when I tell it what kind of paper I'm usin. Eh? Anyway I guess I'll just manually adjust the brightness by about 60 unites every time I print something. RMJ

A very important step to skip. Do some searches on YouTube and find out how to implement each ICC profile. When you do you will have a DOH! moment.

Thank you, I notice there are several clips on YouTube, maybe I will be able to understand one of them.

Watcher: Thanks, I've read most of the article, of course I've calibrated the monitor and set the brightness so I'm back to just add 60 units of brightness and print away. RMJ

Geez... just pick the correct ICC PROFILE, and you'll be fine!

Sure, just pick the RIGHT ICC profile. I can't make sense of the Canon page, when I asked them they want more information which I am in the process of getting together. Meanwhile, add 60 units of brightness. Just cause I've got a Ph.d. doesn't mean I understand all this stuff! Geez
