Ploughing (or Plowing)

Taken at the Forest of Arden Agricultural Society Ploughing and Hedging Match at Sherbourne near Warwick, UK, on 21 September 2017. Picture 1 is a Model N Fordson which I called 'Kerosene Orange'. Picture 2 'Aficionado' - I had a chat with him; he has a collection of four Minneapolis Moline Tractors, one of which he says is the only one in the UK. Not surprised, I don't think many made it over the big pond. He also has a Minneapolis Moline ballpoint pen which writes 'All Colours' - go figure! Picture 3 'God Speed' - God Speed the Plough is known as the farmer's toast. Need I say more?

Been over there for such events. Fun and interesting. Was it George Bernard Shaw who said, "The British and Americans are two countries separated by a common language?"

It appears folks will make a contest of any activity. Wow. Who knew? I guess it makes about as much sense as NASCAR racing here in the USA (where 40 drivers go around in circles for 400 to 600 miles as fast as they can...).

Surprisingly, many of the contestants collect tractors but aren't directly connected with farming. I suspect many farmers have better things to do these days

Those interested in Minneapolis Moline can find an article on WikiPedia. I remember their factory well.

That's even more bizarre, that someone would collect tractors they don't use! I'll bet they are quite interesting to listen to.

Plowing contests were very popular during the 50s and 60s. I grew up in Minnesota and there were local contests every year. There was a whole list of things the judges looked for such as how well the ground was turned, how well your plow cut the full width of each of the bottoms, and leaving a couple of inches of stubble showing at the top of each turned furrow.

I am always interested in the Minneapolis Moline (MM) tractors. MM actually stood for Modern Machinery. We ran two of them on our farm when I was a teenager. One of the best built lines of tractors and implements of their day.

Nice photos, I especially like the 2 horsepower plow. I worked for a couple of old farmers when I was a kid. The one always said it was better working with horses.
The reason being when a horse got tired it knew enough to quit, a man on a tractor would work himself to exhaustion because he was to stupid to quit. They had a tractor but the one brother, they were brothers, would only use the team. He hated that tractor with a passion.
