I got a Roku Streaming Stick hooked up yesterday, mainly so I can watch Doc Martin on Acorn. So far, so good. It has an awful lot to offer, but, of course, many of the offerings require a monthly subscription. Channels are generally only $5.00 a month, but if you get half a dozen of them, the cost adds up. What I would like is a channel that I could populate with shows I want to watch. Acorn has Doc Martin, Hulu probably has one or two I like, and the same with the others. No channel I've seen so far offers enough that I would want to keep paying month after month. I can find enough to watch on Netflix, so I'll keep that.
Do you have any tips for using Roku?

I acknowledge this isn't what you're looking for, Jerry. But... have you ever checked out PlutoTV? It's a free service that runs on iPad or computer that you might be able to mirror through Roku.
I just switched to Roku and found a few free channels worth watching. Take a look at Pluto- free TV and some movies.
Another is Baby Boomer Cartoons- the real cartoons we grew up with.
i use it on one of my tv. as i stream everything i find it the best of the bunch. i have tested apple and amazon fire as well
as i am an prime member on amazon they have a lot of free movies, etc.
the only thing i pay for is netflix but have tested acorn and mhz and hulu and when the free trial end i just cancel.
use an antenna for local stuff
got tired of paying for cable when using so little of the content
there is a movie channel that is free in fact a couple, crackle and tvti
Oops it should be tubitv not tvti

I've had one for a long time.
Primarily for Netflix and Amazon Prime Movies. After that, I just either check out shows on youtube or whatever.

I like being able to watch YouTube on the TV now.

you would need a smarttv and download the app for that channel
or check out roku's apps and add it to your viewing list
Jerry, Perhaps we're showing our age, but I wanted to get access to TCM. So, in addition to Netflix, we've added Sling $20 with many offerings, and then another $10 to get to TCM. In our house, that $30/month will be the only addition to Netflix.
You've helped so many, I hope I can return the favor.

I find it annoying that we have to pay $5 or $10 for almost every channel we want to watch. I doubt that I'll keep Acorn after Doc Martin ends. It has some good shows, but it's not worth $60 a year to me. Netflix and Amazon and Crackle have plenty to offer.
