Posting Photos
My question: Who posts their photo's on any of the following, 1) social media sites, 2) on personal web sites, 3) on web sites that are semi pre-built such as smug mug? Also, for money or for fun? And what is your recommendation if for money?
I post photos primarily for sharing, but also for comments and constructive criticism on:
- social media sites
- photography enthusiast sites
I have not (yet) been posting with the intention of selling any images. /Ralph
Thanks Ralph, I'm with you on where and why I post. Thinking of selling but that of course brings business back into my nice retirement...
I occasionally post images on facebook, and on photography forums like this. However, I also upload all my images to my personal smugmug site for family members across the country. My sister in law creates scrapbooks for our kids each year using the images from my site. Since I categorize it by year and month, this is easy for her to keep it in chronological order. I've been using smugmug since 2007, and find their platform perfect for what I want. You can click on my username to find my site if you're interested. As for making money off of it, that's not my cup of tea, as photography is more of hobby.
I seldom post anything of interest anywhere. The most posts are here. I consider those free to use by anyone.
Those I care about for one reason or another are published on a web site that I own/control and are displayed in such a way it is nearly impossible to save but with a print screen. I used zoomify until recently and am looking for a similar software now. (Produces hundred of small partial images).
Thanks Cdouthitt, basically I am doing the same thing. I don't have a sister in law that will do the the scrapbooks (which is very nice by the way).
Thanks Rongnongno, I have not heard of zoomify, will investigate.

I ocasionally put things on facebook - but then I only have a few friends and family as contacts. I am not obsessive, just not a fan of social media. Photography is my pleasure, not a business - so see no point.
Post on SM twitter,Facebook, instagram as the main 3. Sell on Red Bubble, & fineart America. Published 5 times in the past year in Our Iowa Magazine.
Earning money on all three with the most lucrative being the magazine as it paid for tires and a trip to Blackhills.
Red Bubble is free and does best for me online with little advertising. I am not getting rich but it helps support an expensive hobby.
I post images on Facebook for my friends and my own website for viewing by the general public.
I do it for fun, but if I were so sell any, that would be great.

I post for fun, no income involved. I post for myself and for a couple of groups I belong to.

I use SmugMug for galleries of example photos, which are for sale. I have the Portfolio plan, which facilitates sales and offers a lot of different printing capabilities. And, I love the quality and service provided by SmugMug. In addition, I have a plug-in for SmugMug within Lightroom so that I can seamlessly update the galleries... I also post on Facebook to attract new followers, which I hope leads to new customers. I have accounts on 500px and Instagram, but haven't posted on either yet. Not sure why not, but... Here is a word of caution: Copyright info should be on any photo posted anywhere. Make sure your photos are protected. There are too many nefarious thieves out there. The exception, for me, is that the images on SmugMug are protected from download by any users. So, that is my $0.02 worth! Hope it helps.
I take a lot of action sport photos, in burst mode, and therefore take a lot. I'll share these with other parents and team members via SmugMug, sometimes without vetting any. This results in some throwaways being in there with the good. I do this in the name of expediency to get them out to them. This IS NOT a good practice for a site where you plan to sell your photos. The reason being that you want to be sure your photo selling site has only top quality photos, in terms of IQ, composition, exposure, etc. so that folks visiting that site will be impressed by the quality of all photos and may be more likely to buy more than one.
Of course, you can segregate and password protect in SmugMug so that they'll only see your "salable" stuff, but probably better to have a different account since it sounds like you might want sell more than one photo.
There's Flickr, Zenfolio, and others available, as well.
I use SmugMug. Check out their features and plans at
http://www.smugmug.com . I've posted less than a dozen pics on social media.
I actually use Dropbox for most photo sharing. I have a paid account, but the free one would do for a lot of folks. Not a good choice if you don't want others to be able to download the original file.
