The truth might hurt, but it will help to improve.
I post very few photos on UHH.
I ask for (All C & C welcome)
There is no reply or It's Nice, I'm look for comments to help improve.
There will be a few reply's, but 850 or more viewers.
The site is more a social site than a helpful site.
You not help a person when you lie about the posting
I see pictures that should have been delete instead of posting.
Exp: birds with tail cut off, out of focus, etc.
I thank most reply to the one's that reply to their postings,
And it's always great or nice when lots of then should have been delete in the camera.
Just my thinking

CM, have you thought of posting in either the critique section or the For Your Consideration section? Both of those will garner critiques.

Start submitting pictures in the stock art website and you'll find out quick which pictures qualify and which dont. They are really strict with their standards. This picture was just accepted this morning
Probably should have been deleted.
I, for one, always try to be honest. I do not, however, display a mean spirit or profess to be correct at all times. I just offer my opinion which is not expert or more valid than any other.
Goldwing, I went to your topics-created list and pulled the past few updates. The hummingbirds are excellent and far superior to most images posted into the gallery. I remember seeing them yesterday and only would have added an "excellent" comment. The gallery isn't for anything else, that is: compliments, some discussion of the images / the location / the weather / etc. There are specialized sections for processing or image specific critique.
Going through a quick selection of your images, I will say you've done a mostly good job of selecting excellent images to share. But, keep in mind you're only as good as your weakest image. The Green Jay from the birds in July is a beautiful bird, but the image is slightly out of focus and rather noisy in the details. It was not as good as the others in this selection. You should have withheld that image.
Yes, this is a social site, mostly on photography in the photography sessions. Those that look at their own work and ask specific questions about issues can get a ton feedback, some of it even useful. Using the Green Jay as an example, a question in Post Processing about how can I remove the graininess in the black plumage could get some detailed and specific help. But, you wouldn't get unsolicited critical comments in the gallery even with C&C welcome.
GoldwingerTX -
Here's some of that criticism you requested:
1) there is no "lie about the posting" - you meant to say the person responding lied about liking the image posted.
2) the past tense of "delete" is "deleted"
3) the accepted abbreviation for "for example" is "e.g.", not "exp:"
4) the present tense of the word "think" is "think" not "thank"
5) instead of "lots of then", you meant to say "lots of them"
6) again, the past tense of "delete" is "deleted"
Hopefully, these comments will help you improve.
Just my thinking,
Ralph

The reason you see comments that are over generous with compliments even for mediocre pictures is because most people on this site don't really understand or appreciate the finer points of photography. This includes composition, use of light, depth of field, and focus.
They are primarily snapshot shooters who lack experience and skill, and have trouble distinguishing between poor images and great ones. If the picture is of a subject they like and the exposure allows them to see it, that's enough for a positive response.
To be sure, there are many people here who actually know what they're talking about. That should be clear when you see how they critique a photo. However, often a real critique can seem overly harsh.
Photographers hereabouts like to share their work, part of the joy of photography. So what if some of it doesn't meet more discerning tastes and abilities? At least everybody is participating and hopefully, learning.

If I were seeking analysis of a photo, I would post in the Photo Analysis forum. If I posted in the Photo Gallery I would not expect much detailed critique.

Although from the Section Rules from the Photo Gallery, it applies here too:
Do not hijack topics by posting your pictures inside someone else's topic in a manner that would divert the discussion away from the original poster's pictures. In such situation, it's best to start a new topic and post your pictures there. It is OK to post pictures when explicitly invited by the OP or when posting pictures inside an existing topic would genuinely benefit that particular discussion.
Is this a spelling site or a Main Photography Discussion site?

After looking at the Green Jay picture again, I agree with you I should not have posted it looking like that.
Thanks

Hi, CM. The Gallery is mainly for sharing. The Critique section and For Your Consideration are more about feedback. The Photo Analysis section is not about feedback, as suggested - it's for getting advice on specific issues that the poster is having with a particular shot.
