Aurora and On1 have introduced software to deal with raw files. What will happen when a new model camera is introduced? Will users have to wait for them to catch up, as with PS? That would seem to be the only course of action available to them.

Of course there'll be a delay. The question is, who will update in a responsive manner, and who won't? I don't use Corel products because they were, a few years ago, astonishly slow. So far, Adobe has been very good about updating.

That's one of the reason I stop using Lightroom because Adobe was so slow updating.

On the other hand, there those of us who are slow updating their cameras. Real slow. like months or years.
Keep in mind that software companies are stuck at the starting line until they receive input from the camera mfg .

And every camera seems to need its own raw specs, for some reason.

I am slow updating my camera, but keep in mine, when a manufacture comes out with a new camera (a new model) that software company better be on there game, people are going to buy that camera as soon as it hits the shelf, if not before then. if the raw want work with that software, there going with another software that does work.
Keep this in mind, you go out and buy a $1,000 camera, you got it, your proud of it, you spent your hard earned money, but you can't shoot raw? Adobe failed me twice, it want happen again, I'm done with them. A company like Adobe should the first one on the market to upgrade there software not 3-6 months later.

It's a shame that camera manufacturers refuse to communicate with top editing software companies for camera profile updates in advance of release dates.

Compared to what? When I used Corel, it took them 12 months to update for my new camera. With Adobe, it seems to take, maybe, 2 months. Is anyone doing it faster?

The inability process raw immediately could slow initial camera sales.

in the mean time there is the Adobe dng converter and Nixon's NX-D processor. It isn't like new users can't work with the D850 raw files at all, there is a way.
