New lens

I have a55-300mm Nikon lens and it seems to me that at times the lens does not focus. Now I'm thinking of getting the new 18-300 or the 28-300 Nikkor lens. I have the 18-140 but I want a good lens that will focus easily and fast. I can't decide which one is better. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help🙄

I had the Nikon 18-140 and sold it - my mistake. It was a good all around lens. I also have the 55-300 which I use on my Nikon D5300 without any focusing problems in "normal" lighting. I haven't used it in "available darkness" shooting situations.

I would go for the FX 70-300 VR AF-P valuing IQ over convenience.

Which? There are two, one max out a f5.6, the other at f6.3. I'm assuming you own the Nikon lens.

I use the 28-300 on the same bodies and I have not complaints. I originally wanted to get the 18-300 but my local Nikon dealer was out of them and gave me a good deal on the 28-300. I have the 16-80 so I really don't miss those 10 millimeters.

The two lenses you have are good lenses and should focus well. It's almost certainly due to how your camera is set up. Check menu items a1: AF-C Priority Selection and a2: AF-S Priority Selection. Those can be set to focus or release. Make sure they are set to focus. Also, if you are shooting static subjects make sure you're using AF-S mode not AF-C.

I've had the 28-300mm for years, and it's my go-to lens. Fast focus.

Just an Amateur point of view, I have the Tamron 16-300 on my D5200, I use it all the time! From light to dark, M-A-S-P or auto, hasn't failed me yet! I do screw up, but not the lens, it is me! Love it, only reason I would change is for a 18-400 and a 150-600 G2.

I had the Nikon 18-200. Traded that lens for the Tamron 18-400. Both worked for me. Tamron more reach. My first Tamron. Built well.

I had Nikon 18-55mm and a 55-300mm lenses but got tired of constantly changing lenses on my D5500. I asked UHH if they thought the Nikon 18-300mm lens would be a good choice for a walk about lens and a fair number of responses indicated there is a loss of picture quality at either end of a long zoom extension like this. They recommended the 18-200mm lens which I bought from B&H and it is indeed a superb lens for my needs. I'm not sure about a 28-300mm lens but you have to decide if 28mm is a wide enough angle for your needs, assuming you absolutely want to go out to 300mm, sometimes. For me, the 18-200mm range is perfect.

A lot depends on what you shot. I use the 18-300 5.6 as my go to lens for wildlife, the four legged type. Focus is fast, My D7100 is set for BBF and AFC, SS at 1000 works best.

What interests me is picking up an older generation Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens. One of the best lenses ever made and now with the new version out people are selling their older generation version for this new one and there are some deals to be made. New one will cost you about $3,000.00 older ones go from around $600.00 to $1300.00 for a V. II.
