I don't know what type of butterfly, but you captured it beautifully! 
eta: I just looked it up, and I think it might be a Painted Lady. It's not quite as vivid in color on the underside of the wings as the Painted Lady I'm familiar with here in Montana.

I think Cathy is correct in her ID, Carlo, and what a beautiful shot!! The American Lady is similar, but this looks like the Painted Lady to me.

Excellent shot Carlo. Everyone is right about the Painted Lady. An American Lady has two large "eyes" on the hind wing yours has 4 - Painted Lady. Well done.
