Looking for a quickie app that can show the jpeg imbed (ie low/med res) out of the RAWs that doesnt require a significant app import overhead penalty. For now, my 5dmiv can show the jpeg image out of the raw file on windows 7 explorer while still in camera. My 6D will not.....and once I transfer to my harddrive and view them using explorer, both 6d and 5d files are just files and I need to open DPP or LR to see the image...but its slow and i may not want to catalog them....just keep them in the dumpster for emergencies. What is the most efficient way to view? Does LR have a low/med res import view before inporting? Explorer is so quick but you cant see the raws in older OS. Uograde to Win10 is in my future but for now .... ?

FastPictureViewer codec pack will allow you to view nearly any image file from your Windows Explorer. It ain't free, but it ain't expensive ($10-$15).

There's a free Windows codec file that will enable Win 7 to view the JPEG within a RAW file. Windows 10 has it built in.

Every digital camera I've purchased, including the two Canon Rebels and two Canon Elphs I purchased before switching back to Pentax, was packaged with a free CD containing the codec needed by Windows to show contents JPEG contained in raw file with no further action by me.

You need to load a "codec" to be able to view RAW files directly in Windows 7 Explorer (small, medium or large thumbnails) and Windows Photo Viewer (enlarged image).

I recommend the FastPictureViewer codec, which costs all of $10 per computer. http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

That codec not only works with all Canon CR2, but also with virtually every other type of RAW file... Nikon's, Olympus, Sony, Pentax, etc.... as well as other file types such as TIFF and PSD that Windows normally can't directly display. The FastPictureViewer codec works great! I've got it loaded on three computers (2 laptops and a desktop). I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on all of them.... but I understand the codec works with all Win OS from late XP onward, 32 and 64 bit.

There's also a more complete FastPictureViewer "Pro" program that provides a lot more functions and costs $50. I haven't used it, so can't really comment.



Canon themselves offered a codec at one time... But it was for 32 bit OS only and they never updated it for newer cameras. I doubt it would work with recent models like 5DIV. It also only worked with Canon RAW files types: CRW, 12-bit CR2 and 14-bit CR2. I used it at one time, but when I went from 32 bit to 64 bit OS it no longer worked, and don't know if that Canon old codec is still available.
