Hi. My name is Eduard, i`m from Bucharest, Romania and i just bought a 12 year old Olympus E500 fitted with the equally old 17.5-45mm lens. Aside from the fact that the lens often struggles to focus in low light conditions and iso performance is not up to standard, it`s a wonderful camera, more technically capable than i am as a photographer. So it works out.

I bought my first real camera around 10 years ago and since then i`ve come to realize that photography is always more about the photographer than the camera equipment. I see people with expensive new cameras missing the shot all the time at my workplace and frankly i don`t wanna be a part of the consumer photography trend anymore. Kudos to the people that still make good photographs with their film slr, i would too but digital is cheaper and much like everyone today, got used to the lazy way of shooting.

It`s amazing to think that we now have the best cameras ever made by man, we take more photos than ever before, and yet they made better photography 100+ years ago. This must be the ultimate paradox. Back in the day i was subscribed to a photography magazine in my desire to learn more about photography. It was fun for a while, after which i realized that those people were just making a living from selling the magazine, not necessarily educating the readers during the process. It`s 99% commerce and 1% art. Nobody`s really going to tell you what camera you should buy, because that would hurt business. People buy Nikon and become smugg, other people buy canon and think they got a great deal, and both are wrong.

Almost nobody in the photography world will tell you that it doesn`t really matter what camera you buy, how expensive or new it is. It`s mostly the person holding the camera and the lens that do the job, it`s not the camera that determines the final quality of the picture. This is why we have huge numbers of shitty pictures floating around on the web or in so called fashion magazines.

I also hate the people who use photoshop as a casual photography tool. Don`t get me wrong, i edit my photos as well, do collages and correct color mistakes. But a real artist with a proper gear should be capable of pulling a perfect shot straight out of the camera. You shouldn`t be needing two hours of editing just to make the image appealing. You like to edit images? Become a painter! Use the brush to edit the picture however you like. Photography is something else.

I know many people will hate me for what i`ve just posted here. But the truth is always painful. And the truth is that very few people can be good artists, indifferent of what type of art we`re talking about. Nowadays we mostly live in a world of sellers and buyers. I`m a buyer, and i hate that.

Photography shouldn`t be about people selling and buying. Art is not something you buy. Art is something within that shouldn`t be auctioned or measured by any standard. I think photography is something personal. And unlike some people, i don`t believe in the "l`art pour l`art" concept. Art is above commerce, and morality is above art. Like it or not, this is the situation. All people come to realize this, unfortunately for many it will be to late. So, if you can do something good with your photography skills, good for you and keep up the good work.

Thank you for your comments. I agree, wholeheartedly with you. IT IS NOT the camera. It is the person behind it. I also detest people who overuse " Photoshop." BB

Yes , photography is art .
Snap shots are collections of life . Both are equally important to the individual .

Edward, My first digital camera was an Olympus E-500 too. A great camera that I used professionally
for a few years. It did everything I wanted/needed, and produced fine 11X14 prints. However, newer cameras
offer so many more features.

Welcome to the site.

I shoot with "older" cameras. A Canon 1DS and a 1D, both Mark lll's. They fit my needs, are pro bodies and I bought them for less than 10% of the original price. I bought used L lenses, and I will put my shots up against the newest camera of any make. I laugh to myself all the way to the bank.
I use lightroom, lightly. Way too many people, over saturate their shots. Over processed images, boor me. It still amazes me to see older film shots, and the clarity and sharpness than achieved.
So, I do agree it is the person behind the camera.

Eduard, I agree with a lot of what you said. I see a LOT of beautiful pictures on this site. But they always make me wonder how much is beautiful picture from the photographer and camera and how much is enhanced post processing. Maybe there should be a section here for pictures with NO post processing, except perhaps some cropping.

Don't hate you! Truly respect ALL the points you make. The Oly 500 was and still is quite viable today.

Welcome to The UHH! Lots to learn here, just ask. Post some images for criticism if you can stand to be criticized! Enjoy your visits! I admire and share your attitude about getting the image perfect SOOC but also I think Post Processing helps us save the lost. I thank Adobe for creating it so we can recover from our mistakes on irreplaceable images.

Newest gear is relevant if you need it for a specific type of photography. In all other cases (IMO) it matters little. It may have greater limitations as does my old 5D, but it can still produce beautiful images. I think it comes down to knowing your gear. Welcome to UHH.
