Um, it's the written equivalent to a spoken um or uh. It means, "I'm ready to type but don't know what I want to write."

Yep, that's quite annoying. Worse, and if you'll listen carefully, newscasters and most commentators on TV simply cannot respond or answer a question without starting with a "So". The worst offenders are the highly educated. Once you notice this and your hearing becomes attuned to this intro, it will drive you crazy.

Thanks for opening the door so I could vent on this silly habit!

We once had a member that I referred to as the "Grammer Gestapo"; he's banned now.

So...., if the highly educated drive you up the wall, what do the uneducated masses do for you, you know, the ones that don't even know what part of speech, "SO", even is?!?!

I wear a police uniform when I am taking pictures in questionable locations. Better safe than sorry.

I know a fella who wears a police style vest (buy at surplus) with the word photographer on the back. He's found it quite useful at demonstrations and such.

He's never said he works for the Police, or the local press but has found he gets no hassle wearing it. It's just assumed he is doing his job.

So, your saying we could start sentences without using So. So, do you feel that's a good idea? So, you think we should all follow this advice? So, how do you really feel about this two letter word? What do you really have against it? I think I might start using it now. So, how do you feel about that?

I have not shot at Richmond but I would guess that the blue vests are the ones handed out by the track to photographers from local papers, racing publications etc. At NHMS we get brown ones with NHMS and a number on the back.

Recently at a right to speech rally turned violent in the South many MEDIA persons were targeted if they were taking images BOTH SIDES did not want published. Same thing happened to us when I shot for UPI (united press international) at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago 1968. We were targeted by the Chicago Police and our camera's (if caught, some officers couldn't run very fast or far) were smashed. Some of us were even hit with night sticks. It got so bad UPI issued us Kodak Instamatics to complete our assignments.

So why do people put two question marks at the end of their sentences when one will do it?

So why do people start one sentence without using a capital letter and the other sentence with a capital letter?

Unfortunately, the "English" used by many on UHH goes way beyond
things like the "So" issue. It is often simply awful. If people would do no
more than read what they wrote before clicking "Send" it would probably
be a big improvement. >Alan

Yeah! What's wrong with those people? And while we're at it, why do some people NOT capitalize the first word in a sentence? I mean, where's this world goin'!?!? 😊
