D800 and Nikon 200~500

I am planning purchasing the 2/5 lens very soon and I am wondering how my D800 will work with the lens. Will images be sharp enough to print 8x10,11x14 and even 16x20? Will the resolution hold up at those print sizes? A friend uses the 2/5 lens with his D500 and his results are very good, but I have 16mp more in my D800. Is it possible the D800 might out resolve the 200-500 lens.
I am new to this forum and this is my first attempt at writing. I hope to have more success here that I had at another photo site.

Thanks
Larry

I have the Nikkor 200-500 that I use on my D500 with excellent results. The closest equivalent lens I own is a Canon EF mount Sigma 150-600 Sport that I use on my 50 megapixel EOS 5DSR with pretty darn good results on my 13 by 19 Pixma Pro 10 printer.

You should be able to print at 100% resolution at 24 by 36. More than you will find a printer to print.

I have the set up and it works great, just buy it, use it and you'll love the resultant photographs, assuming you like the photo images you take. Great for birding shots. I use a tripod with the lens as it's somewhat heavy and large. Recommend a tripod.

Larry, I own a D800 and a D810. Last year around this time I was looking at the bunch of lenses in this focal length range - 80-400, 200-500, 300F4 with a 1.4xTC, 150-600 Sigma Contemporary, Sport, and theTamron original.

The sharpest without a doubt was the Sigma Sport, followed by the 200-500. I scored a used Sport for $1200 and have only taken my 600mmF4 out once this year. The Sport is every bit as good as the 600/4, but I can use it hand-held, which means I am more motivated to use it more often, and it does not involve the tripod, head, backpack etc of the 600/4.

From what I have briefly seen the Tamron G2 is every bit as good as the Sigma Sport. If the 200-500 was sharper, I would certainly have bought it without hesitation, but it wasn't. I am not saying it's bad lens - only someone who doesn't know any better would make such a statement. But I am saying that if sharpness with a high MP camera is important, the Sport is the sharpest lens of focal length 500mm or longer that you can buy for under $2000, as is the G2. They are both that sharp. The other nice touch is the environmental sealing and front elements that resist grease and smudges, and have a really hard coating. For my use, the 200-500 would only be a fair weather lens, but I go out in freezing rain, rain, snow, etc and that would mean I'd need to leave it home.

My $.02.

I am headed to the Mississippi in Jan for eagles. I am buying it for that firstly and I'll also use my 600mmF:4VR By Feb 2018 I'll be cruising the county roads looking for hawks. The 500 end should be more helpful than 420 with my 300mmF:4 & 1.4EII. At Magee Marsh I'll work the boardwalk with the 2/5 on the monopod with my SB-900 attached. My 600mmF:4 is only used at areas outside of the boardwalk.

The 200 - 500 is capable of extremely sharp images. To get the best out of it you must stop down somewhat, at least to f6.3 and preferably to f8. It's heavy. The Sigma Sport is even heavier.

You have nothing to worry about. I have the D-800 and the 200-500 kikkor and as long as I do my part get excellent sharpness.Happy shooting.
