Hello all, I obtained a Nikon D7000 and some lenses from a friend that went with a Sony digital camera.

I am very much an amateur and looking for advice. I know what I have is well beyond my skills.

First off, let me tell you what I am looking to use the camera for. Triathlons! I am a triathlete as well as go cheer my friends and take pictures when not racing. I love it.

I am willing to trade in some items in order to have what I need for a day of pictures.

Here is my current inventory.

1. Body- Nikon D3100 (I already owned this when a friend gave me his equipment)

2. Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm 3.5-5.6G ED VR - This is the earlier generation lens that will zoom out when you carry it and fixed with a rubber band.

3. Nikkor AF-S VR Micro 105mm F2.8G-ED

4. Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm 2.8G IF-ED (DX)

5. Nikkor AF-S 24-70mmmm 2.8G-ED

6. Body - Nikon D7000

I am looking to keep the D7000, and maybe the 24-70mm. Trading in the other items to get a longer zoom.

What would you keep? What lens would you get? ps, not looking to spend any new money. All of the equipment is in good condition but no boxes.

Lastly, I live in the Philadelphia area, so any suggestions on a reputable shop to trade in equipment is very much appreciated.

Thank you

James, before you jump on the "get rid of this and get that" bandwagon, learn what you have to the fullest extent. From there you can decide what works for you and what doesn't. Too many people will be happy to tell you what to do, or spend your money. You're the one that needs to assess what's best for you.

I appreciate that Bob. I have had the D3100 and the 28-200 for a few years.
I already know I need at least up to 200 and want to step up to maybe 300. I was wondering if other sport photographers had any thoughts on the 70-200, 70-300, 80-400 type of lenses. I figure I am covered with either of the two smaller mm zooms.

Again, thank you.

What did you use to shoot the picture you posted? Keep it since this is one type of shot you take and it came out fine.

Now, what's left?

Because of the price you get for trade ins, you would probably have to get rid of the other three to get a good 70-200 F2.8. You may want to go longer later on, but a quality lens today will be worth it.IMHO

Get a notebook you can carry in your pocket. Start making a list of the shots you would like to have but you don't have the lens to make the shot. After awhile you know what you need to buy for your needs. The shot you took was fun but could have been taken with a kit lens. - Dave

No, but there are online dealers.

Folks here give high marks to Keh. You can get an idea what your gear will bring you if you sell/trade. He also sells used.

Define Philly area. Are you talking Philadelphia County, Delaware County, Bucks County, Montgomery County, Chester County, Camden County, Burlington County, Gloucester County.

There's Allens Camera in Levittown, The Camera Shop in Bryn Mawr, Jacks Camera in Philadelphia, Jacks Camera in Exton to name a few.

#3, 4, and 5 are very good lenses, and the 18-200mm could be a general purpose always-on lens. Don't rush to get rid of things. You won't sell the D3000 for much, so why not keep it as a spare or a "rough" camera?

Recent sales on ebay -

Check sites like Keh or even ebay and see what people are trying to sell such lenses for.
You can post them here on UHH for nothing. If you check the going rate for a lens you can get closer to a used retail price, than getting whole sale. And if it doesn't sell here you can go the those buyer / sellers. Remember those places are there to make money not brake even. Just don't ne too quick.

Might try Webb Cam in Philly I have traded some used equipment in on new. I have also done business with KEH and B&H and both will offer a similar price for used product.
