I was just wondering about photographers in general. Sometimes I know that we get very focused on the camera, its settings that we lose site of our surroundings like [the dark, wet conditions, icy footings. etc...]. Recently I fell in dark conditions and nearly broke my hip, I know of a fellow photographer that was backing up to capture that perfect shot when he fell backwards over a bench and broke 3 ribs. Any thoughts?

Always look where you are going! Camera or not.

I was video taping elephants in Sri Lanka at an elephant orphanage years ago with a large Sony broadcast camera. I was set up recording as a large herd of elephants were returning from the river where they were playing and washing. Anyway... I was concentrating on the elephants as they got closer to me and all of a sudden a man grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me back. He told me the elephants would have not moved and walked right over me. Close call....

If we are talking about wildlife I learned a lesson this summer. I was in some thicket with my lens poking through to get close to the swans on a pond. I was sitting on the ground then I had a funny feeling and glanced to my left to find a baby coyote lying next to me not 12" away. Believe me when I tell you I did a rapid retreat scanning for mom the whole time. Then it got up and staggered a few feet. I realized it was very ill. When I got out to the road a police cruiser just happened by so I flagged him down and we tried to find the pup but he had gone too deep into the swamp. The question was if he was rabid. Weeks later I was at a different pond and suddenly there was a medium raccoon right beside me staring me down. I didn't move so he went into the water until he was past me , came up on the bank and went on his way. Small animals but I never heard either one until they were right there. Good thing I've never gone to Africa

I saw a photographer drop his Nikon D810 camera accidentally in a pool during a pool party. He didn't have his strap on his neck. Poor guy had the sickest look on his face when it slipped out of his hands. No broken ribs or hip though. Later I heard the camera was toast.

The worse thing that happened to me while shooting a wedding is when I stooped down and my paints split from stem to stern. I had to tie the arms of my jacket around my waste. Black paints and white shorts, hard to hide.

One day, descending a slope just down from the Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills, I slipped on the decomposed granite face and went head over heels, backpack on and camera in hand. I very consciously rolled keeping my Nikon D7100 pointed up landing on a nearby Sage Bush. A little cut, backpack nicely dirty, more pissed off than anything else. Key learning: Keep yer eyes on the trail, not the scenery.

"Acidents" happen. While photographing people surf fishing on the Outer Banks with a hurricane off shore, I was so engrossed in capturing one fisherman with huge waves as a background that I just didn't notice the huge wave that had me in its sights. Put the meter in my FM out of commission for the whole vacation, but FMs didn't need electronics to take pictures. Me and "Sunny 16" became real good pals.

You are right. The situation was 8 of us were going to photograph a tiger brought to a pond area by the trainer of Triple D Game Ranch. They lined us up with a guard on each side. As I observed the tiger, I wantd a better angle. so, I stepped out of the alignment and moved to get my shot. One guard came over and said I was prey for that tiger and get back in line. I did. It is my ID picture.
