This is the largest hopper I've ever seen -- maybe even bigger that the black lubber I once saw.

Choppers on the hopper

Now that's a closeup!! Wow, Sherry!! I hope there aren't many of these around. Nothing could survive those chompers. I don't know what kind it is, but you certainly have some amazing shots!!

Thanks a bunch, Donna! I may not have a garden left if this guy feeds all night. He was really big. I spotted him when I went out to play with my ringlight. I'm really wondering why I have just let that ringlight sit in a drawer for most of its life. I got pretty close to the guy, but any closer would have disturbed his leaf. Still, there was a bit of cropping done - more than a bit on the head shot. Even with the ringlight, the shutter speed was sloooooow (tripod required), but he held very still for his portraits.

Sherry, about the ringlight, Earl says to start out with a 1/250 shutter speed. I haven't tried it like that, but I had to use a very slow shutter speed and tripod using the ringlight when I shot the spider in the backyard. Next time I'm going to try the 1/250 and see...

No grasshoppers, Angela? They should love all your plants. They are interesting looking. I suppose they serve some ecological purpose, but I don't know what that would be. Hmmm. Maybe to eat all the crops to help man fight obesity.

Thanks for looking and for your nice comments!

Thanks, Donna (and Earl). I'll try that while I experiment with using the light. On these, I probably would have had to max out the ISO to get anywhere near that shutter speed. The kind hopper rarely moved a muscle. The ringlight does help, but I don't think mine is nearly as bright as is really needed. I did buy a very cheap one - maybe I need to upgrade.
GAS attack!!

I think there is an epidemic of that making its rounds, Sherry.
