We got a special Christmas gift, a trip to Alaska in the dead of winter, helping a friend move to Anchorage. Probably would not have ever went there in the winter except for this reason. Would do it again in one or two heartbeats (got to prepare just a little first). Two week warning! LOVED IT. Nothing like we expected, except for some of the cold, of course. I plan on posting several of these over the next few days. Most have the general location somewhere on the photo. Not near as much snow as we expected. I am showing what you could expect/see in the winter time on the Alcan. The better scene's are later in this series. The 'MilePost' is not as accurate in the winter, so gas up in Watson Lake, for sure! No, I didn't run out... But I can recommend a trip to Alaska in the winter!!!

Fantastic, you are a brave soul Doug, it is tough enough in the summer do drive the Alcan. Me and 3 other guys drove from Vancouver to Dawson City in 1954 in March and we had a lot of snow took us 10 days. The bridge you mentioned was under construction. Look forward seeing more.

Thanks for your kind comment! We drove about 50-60 mph, almost all of the 4,000 mile one way road trip! Of course the Alcan is paved ALL of the way now. Was actually easy driving, with "mountain snow tires". The biggest problem we had was when the temperature in Alberta, got ABOVE the freezing point, got mud on the headlights and couldn't see a thing after dark. Had to stop and clean the headlights at every stop. One other problem was between Tok and nearer to Glenallen, MAJOR FROST HEAVES! I remembered those from 3 years ago, and they are still there...
p.s. I think I had lost my marbles to even consider driving it in the dead of winter, lol. But yes, I would love to do it again, at a lot slower pace!
