From all the talk about waiting for the grip, I assume the battery grips for the D800/D800e and D810 will not work with the D850. Paying extra for the higher end batters and charger....Nikon marketing at its best.

However, it still runs great and looks good, so despite the fact that there are cars that I'd love to trade for that go faster and have new bells and whistles (some of the new safety features are fantastic!!), this one is still awesome.....and paid for.....but if you were to say I could have another car that I'd love to have and not have a payment....yeah....I'd go for it. Same with a camera like the D850. It's top of the line. It's the newest world's best pro camera. Many of us would love to have it. Some will take the leap BECAUSE it is so well engineered. Others, like chaman, will stick with what they have because it does what they need, it's in good condition, and it's paid for.....like my car. For some, it's just time for a trade-in.

"And it's paid for"

That to me is an important point. I would like a D850, but I need a new driveway. The camera will have to wait until I can pay for it. It might be in the not too distant future, or it could be I'll wind up with a D950. I won't go into debt for it.

But to those who can swing it now, congratulations and good shooting.

I agree fully and to add to your description, at least in my case, it is paid for!! Should have read Bill's comment first

The reviews are starting to come in for the Nikon D850. To quote from Photographyblog: "Offering a compelling balance of size and speed, the Nikon D850 is the best all-round DSLR camera that we've ever had the pleasure of reviewing. This is really the one camera that can do it all, from landscapes to action, reportage to weddings, the D850 handles it all with aplomb." I anticipate the three usual responses: 1)we don't have enough information, 2)there's no such thing as the world's best camera, 3)mirrorless cameras rock. What other bodies would you nominate for world's best?

LOL... For me it is a camera that will allow me to use my lenses on it. I think that Nikon cameras are every bit as good as Canon and in some areas excel such as ISO performance, but for me my lens collection will always keep me shooting Canon, at least when it comes to DSLR's.

Well. After all of this discussion. If you can't afford the D850 with the additional cost of the battery grip etc, which could put it in the $4100 range. Makes awaiting the D760 with more patience.

A Lexus is a well made automobile. Not cheap. It is expected to last 10+ years with proper maintenance. Parts for repair are a little more expensive than a domestic vehicle. But that's expected. Keep on driving it. You could get another 100,000+ miles on it.

It probably is the best in the world, in year or two it'll be second best, when the next super, do all, end all camera comes down the pike. I took some pretty good pics with my Minolta SRT 102, Mamiya 645, Nikon D2H, Kodak DCS PRO n, Sigma SD14, and Nikon D800E. Subject, composition, attention to detail and creativity will always be paramount with great photography. I think we've gotten into the realm of overkill on some these cameras, seems some people use them more of a badge of honor than a tool.

If you took 5 different cameras and took the same shot of something, I would wager that most people could not tell the difference.

For those of use with Canon equipment, what would be the closest Canon equivalent?

Cameras are not the only tools for measuring a badge of honor. Diamonds, jewelry, Rolex watches, sports cars, etc. are just a few of them.

Probably the Canon 5D Mark 4. That cameras sold new for $3500 when it was first released.

Good review of the DR and IQ of the D850 vs others....and you can tell the differnece...zoomed in to the sub-atomic level :-)
At ultra-high ISOs/ extreme shadow recovery there are substantial differences between cameras ... I have never kept a photo above 5000ISO so it is of no relevance to me.

Tony makes a good point at the end of the video related to fine art photography etc but that is 1% of the population of likely owners.

Net: good camera . Enjoy :-)
