I prefer this shot to the "Male Lion" shot. Unfortunately for "Male Lion" the shadows on his face make his eyes seem dull, whereas with the female, her eyes show up to be bright and alert. The focus in both is spot on. So my vote goes to this shot - which is excellent.

I agree 100%. The difference is the light (isn't it always?). The male lion was shot at mid-day with the sun almost directly overhead, thus the shadows of the leaves on his nose. His eyes were in shade and do look dull without artificial enhancement. This shot of the female was taken shortly before sunset with the sun low in the sky and shining right into her eyes. It really is all about light.
