Was it hand-hold-able, or did it need a tripod?

Sigma 150-500 on a 1.6 crop body - always used on a monopod.

A monopod, eh? ... Wouldn't you be a little better off, using a tripod, or no?

That'd be 2400mm on my a77II using the 4x Digital Extension built-in ....

No.
I'm not looking for a lot of extra stability, although a monopod will give you one or two stops of that.
A monopod is a lot more flexible, especially when tracking moving subjects, and helps with the weight on 9-12 hour shoots (that a major reason for using one) and can be used almost anywhere (tripods are not permitted in some locations).

No tripods when shooting trackside, otherwise you will be told to leave.

Actually, they had 2x Digital Zoom in the a77 ....

They upped it to 4x (incrementally) in the a77II ...

I keep forgetting it's there ... what a wonderful tool ... with my 105 Macro - I'm out to 420mm!!!!
