Using of 70-300 mm lens

Dears, as I don't have 70-200 lens, can I use 70-300mm lens for portraits. I would like to know what will be the difference. Hope anybody will help. Thank u.

Yes you can - tha main difference may be that it will not isolate the subject quie so much, as the 70-300 may be a slower (smaller maximum aperture) lens.

for the record i am very much a newbie myself and joined the forum to interact and get advice from members who have been photographers for many years -there are easier ways to research and find information but some of these replies from questions asking for advice is quite bruising and its dissapointing that comments about lack of knowledge of the subject is made in such a way and in many ways it detracts from the reason of people joining these forums in the 1st. place .

Ron, like all groups of people, about 5% seem to like a dispute and will start one if none are there. I try to ignore them and get the knowledge that is offered.

Most of the 70-300 lenses are of lesser quality than their 70-200 counterparts, with just a few exceptions! Both offer comparable focus length's, with the 300 having the advantage at the long end. Most likely the 70-200 lenses are also faster, allowing for more shallow DOF, a very sought after capability, especially for portraiture! They both do indeed, provide a big advantage in versatility over primes. If you do own one, go for it and see what you can achieve! I myself, prefer my 70-200 for portraits, but I have used a 400mm as well for it and liked the outcome!

Thank you for you comment, there is always some know it all blasting people who are less knowledgeable than others regarding photography. Though I have been a so so photgrapher for years I am always learning something new, that is why is I love this site. It irks me when these know it all seem to forget they had to learn photography at some point.
