I like this. I like his "solitariness." It's interesting that he's apparently walking down some sort of road. The photo seems sharp, and he's very nicely placed in the frame. I'd say you've a portrait here of which to be proud.

Agreed, and I love the choice of B&W.

I don't even notice it. My eye is glued to the elephant. Not arguing with you-- just my opinion!

Everything is wonderful except the small patch of whiteness in the top left-hand corner. It does seem a little "crunchy", but I like it nonetheless.

Thanks, Kathy. Actually he is walking down a dirt road at this point. We were driving in front of him, taking pictures over the back deck of the van (two of us). Moments after this was taken he got perturbed that we were blocking his way and he started to trumpet and run. It looked like he might try to pass us but he could easily have tipped the van over if he got along side of us. So the driver got us out of there pretty quickly. This was shot with an 80mm lens.

Thanks, Ben. I have converted many of the elephant images from Tsavo to black and white. All of the elephants in that part of Kenya are an amazing, and almost unbelievable shade of red due to staining from the red mud that they wallow in. A black and white image avoids the need to explain the weird colour.

Thanks for looking, Breck. Yes, it is a shame that he was so close to the bushes along the road. In most cases f5 is enough to separate the animals from the background, but not in this case. And I refuse to fake bokeh by blurring the background in post.

Thanks philo. A version of this is hanging on my wall. It is a much less "gritty" rendition which doesn't display well on computer screen.

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment. I don't find that small patch of sky too distracting, and cropping it out seems to mess up the composition. Yes, it is a bit "crunchy" or "gritty". That was done to add a little drama. The version I printed is much smoother, but doesn't show as well on computer screen.

That's very interesting, Don. Thank you!
