Does anyone have any experience with Teleconvertor? I'm might be interested in a Canon 1.4 teleconvertor. I would use it with a 70-200 2.8 IS L lens.

I was told the f stop would go to 4.0 using it.

I like the idea of the extra length it provides; but I am not sure if it's worth it.

As always thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic!

A 1.4x TC will give you the magnification of a 98-280mm f/4. The aperture should be fine at normal light levels. You may, or may not see a decrease in image quality. I used to use a 2x TC on a 200mm Minolta (years ago) and it was OK outside.

My only recommendation is that your tele-extender manufacturer should also be your lens manufacturer.

Fran... If you are going to get one I'd advise saving up an getting a Canon EF 1.4X III. Not cheap, but works the best with 70-200 2.8 IS L lens. I have one for my 70-200 and love it.

Hi Fran - Mike is spot on - I did alot of research a few months back and whilst the 1.4 extender is great you dose a slight bit of sharpness - the 2 x extender loses even more sharpness - not noticeable on normal viewing or printing A4 but noticeable when cropping and printing bigger than A4. Go with the 1.4 from canon if total sharpness and large printing is not an issue

I use Nikon/Nikkor lens - I also use Kenko's 2x teleconverter. Except in low light works nicely with my Nikon 80-400 and 70x300 even though Nikon says a TC won't work woith them

I agree, stick with Canon. I use both on a 400mm 2.8 with great results and not much loss of image quality.

taken with 400mm 2.8 and 1.4 tele.
taken with 400mm 2.8 and 1.4 tele....

Yep, I have a 2x Canon that I used to use on my 70-200mm. Collects a lot of dust now. Live and learn.

The Canon EF 1.4X III is much better than the EF 1.4X II also, be sure to get the III. More expensive too....;0)

Thank you for your comments. I placed an order for the canon 1.4x iii.

The images posted on this forum tend to loose a bit of quality, is the original much sharper than what you have posted? I am asking as you have an amazing lens.

I have the very latest Nikon converters but just do not get on with them :(

People report that they get acceptable to good results with the combo you are talking about. Also, on some fixed focal length lens it performs well. On other Canon lens like the 100-400 this is not the case.

You made a great choice!
I use a Canon 1.4 III on my Canon 300 f4 almost exclusively. Using it on a 7D and AF is still lightning fast and IQ is excellent.
Look at any of my wildlife postings here or check out my site, virtually every pic displayed was taken using that combo.

Fran: It is true, the light collecting ability of your lens would drop. However, if you are using it outdoors, as almost certain you will, it should not cause a problem. The lens/camera/teleconverter will work great. I speak of the Canon 2X expander and have no idea how the Kenko or other third party solutions would work.
