What's the best way to go?

When you buy new, you get a manual, all the parts, and a warranty ...

When you buy refurbished, you save a bit, but is it worth the savings, to lose out on the other?

When you buy used ... you get ZILCH extra, and - perhaps, only, a 30-day return policy ...

Does that make up for the smelly trash they might have sent you?

I've purchase 6 "used" compact digital (U.S. version) cameras, beginning in August of 2011. All came in mint condition with box, manual, warranty, and included accessories ~ sometimes with an addition to sweeten the deal...like an SD card, strap, etc.

You mean they just throw in an SD Card, or strap, or have you had to pay extra?

The former is correct. Example: When I purchased a used Sony a6000 body (that included an SDHC card); I pays my money and before the seller and I part company, he reaches in his bag and hands me an unopened 16-50mm kit lens.

i use only file, so my experiences may be different than most folks. i've purchased used equipment from may individuals and companies over the years and have never been disappointed. but.... the equipment purchased has usually been of a specific type - noct-nikkor, noctilux (leitz) lenses, where you can be pretty sure the prior owners have been very careful with them in their usage.

All my cameras are second hand. All film cameras(35mm and 120mm film) All work with no problems.

Looks like you lucked out, then ...

Incidentally - both of the trashy used cameras I bought - both worked perfectly ....

But the D90 reeked of B/O ... and the K-3 had a powerful damp electrical smell ...

Seemed like it had been sitting underwater for a while - perhaps, locked up in a trunk ...
