Well I'm looking at a new 5D iv, The person at the camera store ( Best Buy ) tells me it is available with canon log or without. From what I could interpret it is mainly movies. Does it address the large file size of 4K on the 5D, they were not sure. Is it worth the extra $100 ? As always Thanks !

See Canon's web site:

I would never use it.

Do you plan to shoot video with the 5DIV? If not, then you aren't missing anything without it. If you do plan to shoot video and do post processing of that video then it looks like it would be worthwhile to have. The video on B&H's web page describes it pretty well: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1348564-REG/canon_1483c082_eos_5d_mark_iv.html

Please don't refer to Best Buy as a camera store.

If your main concern is video, it might be useful, but for an additional $100?

Again, I'm going to ask why camera companies can't come up with better names. "Log"? Really? What does that tell the public about the product? Is it a yule log that takes video of the family as they sit watching it burn in the fireplace. I wouldn't buy it because of the name alone.

It is for video, but unless you plan to use the proper software and perform the kind of video post processing needed to get the best from it, I wouldn't bother. Its really intended as a feature for professional and advanced hobbyist vidiographers.

Its a professional video feature previously available only on Canon's pro cinema line. Its not really intended for the average consumer.

If he's not planning on doing significant PP of 4K video what does he need it for?

A much improved dynamic range is just one of the many benefits, for example!

But the nature of using it pretty much requires PP from what I've read, so as I said earlier, if he's not going to perform extensive PP, what does he need it for?

Unfortunately for some of us Best Buy is nearly all that's left for a store that stocks, sells, and has department sales folks that know anything at all about cameras. I think there might just be one other local camera store here in a city with under a million residents.

Since Best Buy is much closer to me and actually has parking I go in occasionally and look dreamily at cameras.
