If you decide on the Olympic Peninsula, check road closures, I think the 101 was closed for repairs in some areas.

If you want foliage, WA is not the best place.

Sad to hear. I just remember how beautiful the Columbia River gorge was when I was in the Coast Guard many years ago stationed at Swan Island in Portland.
