If you decide on the Olympic Peninsula, check road closures, I think the 101 was closed for repairs in some areas.
If you want foliage, WA is not the best place.

I have postponed a 15 mile hike to photograph fall colors around a waterfall because sadly, there will be no colors this year. I visited Yellowstone several years after the devastating forest fire they had there. It was pretty desolate--but it has recovered. It takes time...

Sad to hear. I just remember how beautiful the Columbia River gorge was when I was in the Coast Guard many years ago stationed at Swan Island in Portland.
