Camera pixel count vs 4k tv

I like to create slide shows for my 4k tv and was wondering about pixel count. Will there be an improvement in image quality on the tv with file pixel count higher than 8mp? Also, can I crop a larger image down to 8mp without a reduction in quality on a 4k tv? If this is the case, the an 8mp or 10mp camera would give me the highest resolution obtainable on a 4k tv.

Your 4K TV can only display 8MP or so, going beyond that won't give you any improvement. Yes, you can crop down to 4K on a higher res image, but downsampling a full image would be even better.

As for the camera, the thing is an 8~10MP camera is OLD tech and not going to give you nearly the results a newer body will. Plus, again, there is an advantage in downsizing your images. So, I'd say take a good, current camera and downsize to 4K native resolution for the best results.

Will down sizing in pp give beter results than letting the tv down size it?

You, planning on viewing JPGs right out of the camera? If you don't PP you are missing a lot in the world of digital photography. Even my older cameras are 14 and 16 MP. From there I'll end up with 300ppi, 16-bit TIFF files. That say in a stitched panorama could be up to 1 GB in size!

It's really hard to say. TVs are pretty good at going up, but I'm not sure how well they go down. On the other hand, post processing software is pretty good at downsizing, so that's the option I would use. You could always do a comparison and see if there's any noticeable difference.

If your images are horizontal then I would crop them a bit to make them 16:9 aspect ratio and then down sampling to 3840x2160.
