I have a D500 camera body. I am anticipating buying the above named lens. I am trying to stay with FX lenses as I feel a full frame camera body is in my future at some point. If I understand the 1.5 crop factor correctly, I could expect to get 36mm at the lower end ??
I would really appreciate any input from those using this lens on both FX and DX bodies. I have read some real favorable reviews about this lens, but I never truly trust the source of the reviews. Thank you in advance for your time and input.

Why would this portion of the internet be any more or less truthful than anywhere else?

The Nikon 24-120 f/4 is one of my favorite lenses.

Because some people on the Hog have earned a great deal of respect whilst many web reviewers receive incentives from the manufacturers to plug the products.

The Nikon 24-120 (DX 36-180) f4 is optically good but not great. The zoom range is what makes it desirable. It was on my short list but I opted for the Sigma Art 24-105 f4. No regrets.

In my opinion the best source for judging lenses is DXO if you understand the information provided, although it is not perfect, as no one method is. The problem with their reviews is timeliness.

I have some high quality property in Florida I'm sure you'd love to invest in. Please send me your contact information for a discussion.

And while you're at it, take that pipe out of your mouth and let your head clear and consider:

Who on this site has a professional business performing the following:

A test lab on sharpness and contrast for lenses? Including editing and posting the results of their analysis for independent review by others?

Expends the 80+ hours (2 weeks full-time effort) needed to evaluate a lens including editing and posting examples of the lens in operation?

I could go on ... Of course, a reviewer can be influenced or at least have some bias toward or against a company that assists their own review business. But surely, someone so discerning of the voices of truth on the internet as you seem to be ... you should be able to determine which of these reviewers are which?

I'll be waiting for your email on this Florida opportunity. Act FAST. There's pending events in Florida that will impact the market ...

BTW - the Nikon 24-120 f/4 ED VR FX is a wonderful lens. I don't know where you could go in the real or electronic world where someone says otherwise. On a cropped sensor camera, you give up the wide end as the Nikon D500 1.5 crop factor gives a field of view for a fullframe lens of approx 35mm. Your personal shooting style will determine whether you'll "miss" the wide end or whether you'll benefit more from the 1.5 crop factor against the 120mm long end.

Just 2 days ago, right here on the Hog Blog a thread was started about this lens. Lots of members have commented on this lens and almost all of the comments are positive.

I rented the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 lens once. It's sharp but has a lot of barrel distortion at the wide end and a lot of pincushion distortion at long focal lengths. I think the engineers have to start compromising in the optical design too much when they get to a 5x zoom range or longer. I stay away from superzoom lenses for that reason.

I have a Nikon 24-120 f/4 ed fx. It's a heavy lens. Sharp but not outstanding in that category. Focuses well. Distortion at wide and tele end is not unacceptable. Since you are using a dx format I would suggest a Tokina 11-20 f 2.8 lens to cover the wide side. The tokina is an outstanding lens at a reasonable price. I think this combination should be satisfactory for usual travel needs.

That lens is one of my favorites, that said the new Nikon 16-80 DX is really sharp and much lighter than the 24-120. Do not get discouraged by folks who say it is not sharp according to some lens test. I have found this lens to give my beautiful 20X30 prints, so folks who say it is not sharp JUST DON"T HAVE MUCH SKILL. Yes, if your moving to full frame this is a great lens, but beware, I am sure Nikon will upgrade this lens at some point, it could be next month, it could be a few years.

I have that lens using it on a D810 and it is wonderful. Most useful range in a high quality optic. I am currently considering switching to all primes after I use it for a wedding mid month where such a lens is invaluable-do the entire wedding without a lens change. Now retired, this will be my last wedding and it is for family. I recently purchased a Zeiss 25mm Distagon and fell in love with the beast-sharpest, most contrasty lens I have ever owned and since most of my photography going forward will be tripod mounted I do not mind the manual focus as the 810 shows when proper focus is achieved in the viewfinder. If you have interest in this nice piece of glass let me know and we can talk later this month.

Thx Pat
