I picked up a Sony Alpha 7R II and I shot a few pics in ARW file format. My older version of Photoshop and Adobe wont read the file, is there a easy way to get some software or upgrade to read this, my software is of the purchased type so I don't pay a monthly service fee. I also downloaded the Sony driver for windows live photo and that wont work either. Any ideas? Or am I going to stuck with JPEG in this particular camera?

Use the Sony software that should have come with your camera to create DNG or TIFF files, then those should be open-able by Adobe Camera Raw (it can be set to open TIFF as well as JPEG, DNG and Camera OEM Raw. I'd likely have the same problem as I use Ps CS6. Do you have the last update for ACR that works with Ps CS6, ACR 9.1.1? You might if all fails find a stand alone Adobe DNG Converter for going from ARW to DNG. Never give in to JPGs!

I ended up purchasing lightroom 6 (had 5) just to get the raw converter.

Go to http://www.sony.co.jp/ids-se/

Download and install to read and process ARW files from A7rII

The free Adobe DNG converter is what I was advised after experiencing same issue with PS Elements 13. An extra step, but not a big deal if you like the editing software you're currently using. I open my folder with raw files, select all, and then drag over the top of the converter shortcut on my desktop. Just walk away for 5 or 10 minutes while it does its thing

Just upgrade your ACR, if you can. (it depends on how old your version of PS is, it may not support the ACR version you need). If that is the case, you can download (the free) DNG converter and go that route!

Use the Sony software to convert RAW to TIF. You can also display Sony ARW files directly in Windows' File Explorer if you install the Sony driver.

The least expensive Adobe upgrade is probably Lightroom.

Depending in the vintage of your PS its Adobe Camera Raw plug-in might be upgradable for free. Mine is so elderly, CS4, that ACR support has been discontinued. My work around for Sony a6000 ARW files was to download the free Adobe DNG Converter. But no version of DNG can handle Sony a6300 ARW files. It seems Sony uses different ARW file formats for their several camera models. Post your results, should you have the time.

Neither my a6000 nor a6300 came with computer apps. Can you give names.

Not really. Canon, Pentax, and Nikon cameras come with basic processing and downloading software.
