have they re-opened California Highway 1?

It may be a dumb question but I've "googled" it and can't find the answer. I'm in Connecticut, getting ready to drive to California, and need to know before I get there! Any knowledgeable answers from people on the ground are appreciated!

No, Highway 1 is closed indefinitely. Cal-Trans is still evaluating how to clear/repair the blockage, if ever. If memory serves, there are bridges that have to be rebuilt as well, in the Big Sur area.

You might try calling AAA of California, and ask them.....713 267-2596, or go to AAA.com

The Quick Answer is no. Friends in the area tell me that rumors (not credible) is that it will be opened "soon". But there is another closure north of the Pfeiffer Bridge. A significant mud slide has occurred near Ragged Point. A better web site would be www.DOT.ca.gov/Travel. On the travel page under "Travel Quick Links" click "check current Highway conditions", enter "SR 1" in the box to get the latest information. This will give you all conditions from San Diego to the Northern California border. Central California is the section to focus on. Also, there is an App for That. In the apple app store type in "California Road Report". It is the second app down, below Waze. Good Luck

Update: Don't use "/travel" on the URL. just use www.DOT.ca.gov. Then go to the Travel tab.

Thanks for the responses! US 101 North instead of California 1! I'm going to miss the ocean vistas.

101 is not the answer. It only is close to the ocean in southern California from Oxnard to just north of Santa Barbara. From 101 North to Salinas there is no ocean. When you reach Salinas, about 2-3 hours you can cut out to the Monterey peninsula. You can go DOWN SR 1 until they shut you down. From Monterey south you can get some pretty nice views including Bixby Bridge. North from Monterey and Carmel-By-The- Sea you can go north on CA Hwy 1 to San Francisco. You won't see the Iconic shots of Big Sur but it is just as photogenic. If you plan on continuing north of San Francisco you can get back on Hwy 1 North of the Golden Gate Bridge following the signs to Stinson Beach. From there you can go all of the way to the Oregon Border and beyond. You'll see the Marin coast, Sonoma Coast, way on up to the Mendocino Coast. There are spectacular views all of the way up. Not to be missed for any Easterner who has little chance of coming back any time soon. Best to you. Jim

Going to visit my family in Santa Cruz (and take photos from coast to coast); wanted to take Rt 1 through Big Sur, but that won't work! But I have to go north and then west. I think US 101 north to CA Rt 152 will get me to the coast road and then it's a short jump to Santa Cruz. But thanks for the info!

Here's a more senic option: from 101 at the town of Greenfield take Elm St. that runs into Arroyo Seco and that becomes E. Carmel Valley Rd. that then becomes Carmel Valley Rd. and you end up in the photogenic town of
Carmel-By-The-Sea. Beautiful stuff to see and shoot along this route. Wishing you safe travels. chase
P.S. You can see this on Google Maps, start at Greenfeild and follow Elm St. west.

I live in Marin, just N of the GGB. I have had a regular gig in Stinson Beach for the last three months. It is no longer possible to go around via Hwy 1. Have to cross Mt. Tamalpais via a lot of s-turns until I get to Stinson Beach. But from there north to Jenner it is okay. (That's as far as I've gone.) Great BBQ oysters at Tony's in Tomales. Stop there for lunch.
