I have done this for years and it's simple. I have an adaptor that plugs into my Canon and my iPad. The download is easy.

Your reply was not only unhelpful but misleading in the extreme.
Apple sells an Apple Camera Connection kit. Originally, it had two little connectors: one for an USB cable, one for SD card. Currenty, the two connectors sell seperately. When my SD card connecter is connected and a SD card is inserted, the iPad OS will sense its presence and a little camera icon will appear in the Pictures app panel. Then you can select which images to transfer. The only downside is that the app has not way to rename the images.
That's what I use, the card reader adapter. Makes loading images to the iPad very easy and simple, and it's all automatic.
I bought an adapter cable at Walmart for about $30. It has the apple lightning cable on one end and a USB on the other end. You just plug in your cameras USB cable and you are good to go. The adapter also has an extra lightning port so you can plug in a charger cord in case you need extra juice. My cannon T5I works great like this and it does do raw. For what it is worth my iPad is the new 10.5 pro model
Simple connection. There is actually two adapters; one called a Lighting Adapter and the second adapter which holds the CD card and is connected to the Lighting Adapter.. I use my iPad to store hundreds of photos on my trips and it is working very well. As someone mentioned the cost runs about $30.

My iPad receives raw files
Mine too. And w Lightroom mobile and Creative Cloud, she can process the files (raw or jpeg) and share the wherever.
I plugged my iPad using USB to my computer and with iTunes, transferred the pictures.
I use the Apple adapter. Works great!
I just went through this same problem today. Yes, you can use an Apple Lighting to SD Camera Card Reader (est. $29). It works easily if you take the SD from the camera and directly load it to the card reader. However, if you upload photos to your computer to edit and then save the altered photos to a new SD card, the reader will not work. Save yourself a lot of hassle and expense and use an App to do the transfer. Apple's SD card reader is really intended to transfer photos from an iPad or iPhone to a computer, not the reverse (assuming you work on the photos with your computer software). After wasting 3 hours trying various methods, including iTunes, I finally downloaded the App called Photo Trasfer from the Apple App Store. It's Free. Download it on your computer and your iPad. You connect and trasfer photos via wifi. Trasfer 5 photos at a time for free; more at once requires an upgrade. But I just did 5,5,5, etc and was quickly finished. I would never muck around with the Apple device or iTunes again! An App is the way the go.

My friend has an iPad and wishes to transfer photgraphs from her camera to the iPad.
I am an Android phone user so I haven't a clue, what advice can I give my friend on how to do this.
Thanks in advance.
I use a wireless device that has other uses as well, like for transferring images to memory stick for on the road backup, and a 6000mah battery backup for on the road phone charging.

I have struggled with this. I bought an Apple connection that was to port from a USB stick, but wouldn't work because the stick requjired power. Then I bought one that has an SD card slot, but I can't get the ipad to recognize it even following Apple's included instructions. I passed that onto my son in hopes he can figure it out. Color me frustrated with Apple stuff.
Depends on the camera make, model, and if it has wifi.
I have the canon connect app on my iPad. It sends my images through wifi. I can also use the app as remote live view shooting.

I use an app over wifi called PhotoTransfer which is installed on both my laptop and my iPad. I take the chip out of the camera and download the image(s) to my laptop. Then I use PhotoTransfer to get them onto my iPad. To do it, I run the app on the iPad and get careful instructions on what to do on the laptop.
If necessary, I can transfer in the other direction by first running the app on the laptop. Even my cell phone has PhotoTransfer installed.
