Just a quick note... We did a three-week jaunt up into the Upper Penn of MI back in July. Perfect weather with only one cloudy day. I'm way behind getting pics processed, but if anyone wants details of the adventure, just shoot me a note. It's all detailed on a Google map. Be prepared to hike!
Dozens of waterfalls, lighthouses, painted rocks, yachts, wildlife (although I didn't see much more than deer...), restaurants, coastlines. Cost: a fraction of similar trip on the west coast. Most expensive dinner-for-two was in Algoma by a chef featured on the Food Channel for $85.Plenty of lakeside cabins and lodging.
Definitely a trip to be done at least once.
Thanks! Both of my parents and my older siblings were born in the UP.
When WWII came about, my dad's job had them move to IL, just south
of Chicago. That's where I was born in Mar '42. I have been up to the
UP off and on over the years, but that's been a good while ago now. In
any case, I do agree with you - it is a darned nice place to visit without
dumping out a lot of money. I sure hope my age allows me to make it
back again some time . . .
I know they are pricey, but Roads Scholar does group trips up that way. Leave the driving to them.
One of our favorite places to go snowmobiling!! Absolutely a beautiful place to ride and the people are always so kind!!
Where can I pull up a list of all the points in the U.P. that are highlighted and what they are?
I'll keep this bookmarked for future reference. I grew up in Pontiac, just north of Detroit. We drove up to the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, but not much around the U.P. I've seen photos and it's beautiful. My parents drove down the north western side of the state once and it was also impressive.
I'll PM a link to the map. Each pin is linked to a label.
Ah, the secret is out... Yooperland is MUCH better than Trollsville.
Just got back from a week in the Marquette area. at least 1,000 pictures to go through. Michigan is quickly becoming a favorite state (especially the UP).

No.. NO ... No... It's terrible up here. Go to the west coast or the east coast... much better there. This place is getting overrun with tourists.
I believe the Duluth visiter center has pamphlets on Lake Superior circumnavigation trips. Other bigger towns with visitor centers would probably have the same. I know driving around the lake is fairly popular. As you would enter and exit Canada it would be a good idea to have a passport and also health papers on any dogs you take along.
