Really love your site Steve - thank you for your contribution to UHH. I am far away from an investment in the D850 but it was very informative and your pics truly inspiring! One of these days.......

Good stuff, as I am interested in the 850 it is good to know if I will gain anything over my 810. There are several things that come to mind. The tilt screen, the joystick and the live view with the zebra bars. Hmmm...

Can you please explain the DX mode. I read that you can switch to DX mode and the camera will operate at 20 MP. Besides for the MP is there other limitations
Thank You

Read it and great review. I ordered the D850 as pre-order from B&H the day they had it on their site.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I'll be doing a full review once I have some quality field time with the camera.

DX mode basically just uses the DX area of the sensor and masks off the rest of the frame. In the past, this would increase the frame rate by 1 FPS. So, if you didn't need the entire area (i.e. you were going to crop anyway), then it was worth switching to get the extra frame rate. However, the D850 doesn't see an increase in frame rate when you switch to DX, so one of the major advantages has disappeared (the mirror isn't rated to flip faster than 9FPS is my understanding). However, you will still have smaller files sizes, so shooting in DX gives you a much larger buffer and allows you to keep more images on your card. However, I wouldn't do it unless you were going to crop anyway. I plan on shooting my D850 at full frame most of the time.

I checked with Nikon and putting the D850 in crop mode will yield just a hair under 20MP. This would put it more in line with the D500 except for frames per second which with the vertical grip is only 1 FPS less on the D850.

Maybe I am missing something but it sure sounds like a monumental camera. I have a D300's that I love but its getting long in the tooth. It was going to be a D500 but this sure looks like the best of both worlds.

Sure does, but we will not know till the camera is in our hands.

Exactly. I've had a bunch of people asking if they should sell their D500 and go for the D850 and overall, the answer is "Yes." Not losing much and gaining a WHOLE lot more!

Looks like the best of both worlds, but the field tests will show us for sure.
