I have been using DuckDuckgo browser as my home page for some time now. I couldn't figure why all of a sudden my browser goes to my msn home page. Seems the last update locks it in. I have tried everything I know and it will not change. If you go to Internet Options check your homepage settings. Start on home page is grayed out and not useable. DuckDuckgo shows as my home page but come up msn. I have deleted it and reloaded it. No change.
I use Mozilla Firefox. No such problems yet with DuckDuckgo as my home page. Windows 10

Exactly. Firefox is the answer.

I have Chrome and 3 home pages, two news and one the cable company. I have my updates set (Win 10 Pro) to only install on command and I read the choices when they are given then mark my choices. It wants to keep making Edge my browser and search engine. I just decline each time.
If your using explorer as you Browser MS may have control over the search engine.
Others have stated using other Browsers i.e. Google Chrome, Firefox etc. This may be your fix if you want to keep updating Win 10.
Good luck
Yet one more among many reasons I switched to an iMac last year. Man I do NOT miss dealing with Microsoft trying to control my computer.
iMac for me 5 1/2 years ago. Never, never a problem. Some things are just worth it.
I just changed my homepage in Edge to
www.duckduckgo.com. No problem. You must be doing something wrong. It's not Microsoft.
Have you done this in either Edge or IE?

How to change homepage on Google chrome:
In the top-right corner of your window, click the Chrome menu (hamburger icon).
Select Settings.
Under "Appearance," check the box Show Home button.
Below "Show Home button," click the link Change to choose your homepage.

Never heard of DuckDuckgo.
It's a very old search engine.

I also use, on occasion, 2 ancient search engines, Copernic & Dogpile.
