For most people the 430EX II is the best buy for the value, but as a professional you may need the 580EX II. This may help

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ6fc5XhJD8The 480EX II will serve you well in most instances. But be sure to get a decent diffuser (like a Gary Fong LightSphere) to soften / distribute the light and then consider getting an inexpensive flash bracket to get the flash off axis from the lens.
Both of these steps will yeild much better photos, no red eye, blown out skin, and provide more flattering light for faces.

See the following comparison chart:
http://www.digitalrev.com/article/canon-flash-comparison-speedlite-580/NzcxNA_A_ARemember, it may be wiser to buy one medium and two small flases, as opposed to one large flash. That way you can use the smaller flashes off-camera as fill-in slaves.
Thank you for the link and wise words.
thank you !!! that helped me out alot :D

Just a thought....if you are going to be club shooting you probably aren't going to want to add light....the whole point would be to capture the mood of the place and the lighting is a big part of that.
Having a fast lens is a must in club shooting.

rpavich is right!
But sometimes the low light and fast movement in a night club setting make some shots difficult. I often turn my flash way way down, set flash to rear curtain (so it pops as the shutter closes verses as it opens which is the factory setting) and get the best of both worlds. In this case I always use a directed diffuser -- The GaryFong LightSphere works great for this purpose.

No challenge . . . if you are going to do weddings where you will be in large dark churches . . . large, high ceiling reception halls, and have to combat the bright sun with fill-in flash . . . you have to have the best!
The 430 series will not hack it! Best is the new 600 series, but the 580EXII is also a great unit. Flash units and lenses are not the place to "cut back"
I'm a Canon user and know from personal use that the Canon flash is on the weak side when it comes to bounce flash. A high dark ceiling left me limited (using 580EXII) when my co-shooting Nikon users were shooting away. Get the most powerful flash you can.

FYI . . . the 580EX II has just slightly more power than the Nikon SB800 (considered the equivalent).
Your co-shooting Nikon users were either using an unrealistically high ISO, had a flash modifier or different flash modifier than you, and probably also had bad results.
Experience tells a pro that you do not attempt to bounce from a high dark ceiling. Dark surfaces absorb light, not reflect it, and any color other than white adds a color cast to the image that is very difficult to remove in PP. Next time add a Lite Genius Lite-Scoop to your 580EX II and you'll blow your Nikon buddies away!

I have a nikon 60 and I bought the Nikon flash, the smallest one (forgot what model) This one was not powerfull enough - I take pictures for the fire department. I changed it in for a Nikon SB-600 which I love. It has plenty of power for me to take outdoor shots.
