My wife and I will be driving from New Orleans through Texas into central/northern New Mexico, northern Arizona, Utah, and western Colorado in October for 3 weeks before heading back to MD. We have chosen many sites to visit but would like your advice on locations to see various wildlife . I enjoy all types of wildlife so the sky is the limit! I shoot with a Nikon d7100;my max telephoto is a 70-300 so I know my photographic opportunities may be limited.

Thanks!

While still in Louisiana visit Rockefeller National Wildlife Refuge and Cameron Prairies National Wildlife Refuge. They are near each other and both have areas where you can drive close to wildlife and photograph from your vehicle. There should be many opportunities to capture wildlife at that time of year. I visit them often and always see something to shoot.

The gulf coast is getting beat up by a major storm, many parts of Texas are under water, this may change by the time you take your trip but some roads might be closed for awhile.

By all means include the Valles Caldera on NM 4 just west of Los Alamos. It is one of the most beautiful volcanic craters in the US and Elk abound. This link to MSN OneDrive show some photos of 40 or so Elk we saw in mid July. But we've also seen 2,000 or better in the Valle Grande. https://1drv.ms/f/s!Aggxb6qfCV7Lllgm90M-Q4b9SdQ_

Enjoy, Norm

Jackson Hole, WY and the Tetons are my favorite location when the Elk migrate. Yellowstone is hard to beat for Buffalo and Moose. I go to Jackson Hole every other year for the week of color--Sept 30 to October 6. With my Canon 5DSr and precision pano head, I want to make a 48 x 96 print for a client. You have but 7 days when the Aspens are in full golden color before they fall at Oxbow Bend (Yellowstone). And then it is on to Moab for the arches.

I have seen some of the most beautiful photos displayed at the Art Museum of Buffalo, Elk, and Big Horn Sheep during migration in the winter. Local photographers are able to pick their days--lucky them.

You should be good for the area but as others have mentioned, the Texas/Louisanna are being inundated by rain from Hurricane (now tropical storm) Herman. It should be gone by then but the effects will still be there. New Orleans may be affected but (right now) they are on the outer edge of the storm.

I would check a couple of weeks before I got there.

Be mindful of the coral snakes, copperheads, cotton mouths, rattlers, scorpions, black widows, etc. They don't like having their picture taken.

To be sure! I have a basic fear of and curiousity about snakes. It adds up to a very healthy respect of them as well as an aversion to meeting them.

The Tetons and Yellowstone ate 2 of my favorite places in the world. For this trip, they are too north. I do intend another visit there in a year or two. As for Texas and parts of Louisiana , I'll wait and see what damage the hurricane inflicted before I make final plans.

There is not much to see in Texas, depending on where you are. Near Glen Rose there is a drive through wildlife preserve called Fossil Rim. There are farm/ranch areas where you can see herds of camels or buffalo if they're out, if you're lucky, also the occasional hawk. There are some hot air balloon festivals across the state at various times. You can google it.
