The tundra excursion is well worth the bus time. A bit of advice I got from a friend. Sit at a window on the drivers side of the bus, the closer to the driver the better. I did that and had the best seat in the house and took great photos which I shared with some folks on the bus.

The 'Normally' driest summer period in Alaska is May thru mid-June. The pan handle is a temperate rain forest, so expect some rain there. If you can work it into your schedule, go to Katmai and Kenai Fjords NP's, they are WOW. Misty Fjords NP and Glacier Bay NP are spectacular if you catch them with blue skies. Tracy Arm is awesome!
Sorry, but having driven to Alaska, I don't think I could personally 'do' a cruise there now, knowing all the places we would miss by not driving! Chilkat, Chilkoot, Kulane NP Canada. Drive into Valdez, Kenai Peninsula, Top of the World...

We just did ours, end of May, beginning of June. Some light rain, one day, but dry for the most part. We did Misty Fjords which is where I got my eagle shots, though they were all perched in trees, didn’t see them flying. Not a lot of whale activity, but quite a bit in Juneau. We were supposed to do Tracy Arm, but the Captain made the decision to not go there because, as we were told, “there was too much ‘big ice’…” and felt that it wasn’t safe. We might get IN, but we might not be able to get back OUT.

Getting ready to book a cruise to Alaska. I did a search on UH for best times to go but the results were not clear. We want to go between May and Sept. of 2018. We have decided to travel on Princess Lines and are taking the 10 day cruise that includes the Denali coach and train ride. Is the Tundra excursion from Denali worth the price.

My wife and I along with another couple did that ten day cruise with the train ride up to Denali. I would not do the extra three days again for the following reasons:

(1) They move you every night you are in the park to a different lodge. They moved us on school buses.

(2). That is one long train ride each way.

(3). While we lucked out and got to take a plane flight around Mount Denali (22,000 ft - amazing). Weather tends to ground that adventure most of the time. We also took the float down the river and a walk in the park which was just Okay. See attached pick of Mount Denali)

(4). You get spoiled on the boat with all the food and other stuff, none of which are as good in the park.

While on the 7 day actual cruise we had a great time. We flew by helicopter up to Mendenhal Glacier, got out and were treated to a very informative talk on glaciers; we also rode the Zip Line (our first time at that) which was the highlight of the trip for me; when we entered Glacier Bay we paid extra to sit in the first class section of the boat on the fantail, and that was great. We also went to an on-shore salmon bake (all could eat . . Where do you get to do that?). The staff were great and so were all the folks aboard.

Get a cabin in the middle of the boat with a balcony, you will be glad you did.

The food is out of this world, and the scenery. . . Well, it is Alaska.

Take extra cios for your camera, and back yo everything each night . . twice.

I would go back for the seven day cruise in a heartbeat!!! Just not the long train ride up and back to Denali.

Go for it.
