Another thing to remark on is that I think you did a good job on the face of the preying mantis in its 2nd picture. A thing I run into with those is that the face seems to be extra reflective, and it can have a big blown out highlight with a flash. But you managed it well here. Perhaps by not using a flash at all? Not sure.
Mark, I did have the flash at 1/2 power. Chimping told me I didn't blow the highlights.

Can you tell me what mm lens you are using and which extension tube you are using if you are using such? Mono pod or tripod?
I'm using a Sigma 150mm macro lens, no extension tubes, no mono/tripod and a speedlight. I handhold the camera and flash rig for exactly the reason you gave near the end of your comments. Insects don't stay in one place, let alone one position, for very long.

This is one of the amazing things about BG that took me a while to realize. It at first seems vast. Daunting, and to me it seemed insanely difficult at first to navigate since it was organized around very dense taxonomy. But you can do a specific search like that and come up with pictures. BG is terrific.

Very nice shots. I'm not a but person myself, but I do enjoy the photos of others.

You're right, BG is all of that - vast, daunting, definitely insanely difficult to navigate. I hàven't had a lot of fun it with it so far. I'm hoping that, with some persistence, I'll found out just how terrific it is

Thanks Doc! Gwynedd Preserve is usually a place with few people. There are a number of short, fairly easy trails. Some folks are there for the birds, some (like me) are there for the insect photos but, I think, most are there for walks. Pretty easy to get to, small parking area that I've never seen filled.
