I didn't have any filters for the cameraa, so I used a spotting scope in reverse, reflected on a board.

Yes, I like that.

All the high tech images look the same out there. Zzzzzz. Not too many woodgrain Suns.

I have a pair of 10X Binoculars, could that be used like that? Or should I find a way to mount a camera lens. A giant pin-hole set-up might work too.

use 1 side of the binoculars, You can tape it to the tripod or glue a bolt to it and mount it.
