The Aquarium is a must!! Plan for 5-7 hours, it is really big. A 50mm 1.8 or better is a must, a lot of low light situations. Also a macro lens comes in handy in the butterfly room. No need for any long lenses that I found. My friend Rick has a panasonic PS and he took some great shots with it. 18x zoom and 14MP forget the model. I also took a Bridge camera, but it was not good with the low light.
I agree with the Aquarium! I have gotten great shots of the butterflies there.

lets see the 2ndlargest fresh water aquarium in the world (atlanta at #1) the chatanoga cho-cho holiday inn hotel with actual rail cars. in the hotel they have a room where the chatanooga model railroades have a HUGE setup for public viewing with multiple model trains as well as elaborate geography. lookout mountain and missionaryy ridge battlefields from the civil war. also not too far south is chickamauga national military battelefield. across the river from the aquarium is chatanoga's art district. Its a fun town. enjoy yourself. Almost forgot, because the top three manufacturers of tow trucks and equipment are in chatanoga, you should see the international tow truck operators hall of fame. it is downtown and actually fascinating.
The caverns at Raccoon Mountain (fairly well lit, but another case where you probably want your 50mm f/1.8 lens). If you are at all interested in engineering marvels, get a tour of the Pumped-Storage unit at Raccoon Mountain as well. Huge hydrogenerators that drain a lake at the top of the mountain during the day and then fill it up from the river again at night.
TN railroad valley museum. They have the displays outside also take the train trip to the maintenance and restoration facility. There you have a turntable and the shop where they work on the trains.
The Railway Station at night.
Be sure to check out the Incline Railway and Lookout Mountain

Go to the Hang Gliding launch area on Lookout mountain. It's a great place to get some shots of all down below as well as the hang gliders as they sail over head and out in front of you.

Real simple, keep your eyes open as you move around. You may not like what I do. If I don't like it I don't shoot it.
If you are into cars, don't forget to see Honest Charlie's. They also make some cool Flathead V8 motorcycles, or at least they used to. Also visit Coker Tire; they have tires for almost anything from old muscle cars to model A's and model T's, old race cars, almost anything you would want. I understand it is one of Jay Leno's "go to" places for his collection.
If you are into black powder guns, etc. then you will want to visit Dixie Gun Works not too far out of town.
Chattanooga is quite a neat town with lots and lots of things to do. You could visit for a while and not see it all.
All of the above suggestions are great places. My wife and I spend a couple days in Chattanooga. Its a nice photogenic city. Little Debbie's are also made there as well as Moon Pie. I suggest you tour Lookout Mountain in the afternoon/evening for the best lighting. Morning or early afternoon will have you shooting into the sun. Also on Lookout Mountain is Point Park. It's just a short drive further down the road from the Incline Railway and is the highest point. It has beautiful overlooks of the city spread out below with the Tennessee River snaking its way through. It is also the sight of some Civil War battles so there are historic monuments there as well as some old cannons. There is also a nice riverfront behind the Aquarium where you can get some great shots of bridges. And dont forget to shoot the Choo-Choo Hotel sign on top the building. It too looks great right a sunset with its red neon lights.
Enjoy your trip.
