Win 10 auto update bug!

I have Win 10 with the auto update function turned on and every now and then when I go to use my external drives I receive a message saying in order to use, this drive has to be re-formatted and all previous files will be lost. I naturally panicked the first time this happened, I researched solutions with no results but after several days had passed Win 10 started recognizing the drives! This has happened several times, has anyone had this problem?

Interesting. There should be a solution for this. Too bad you couldn't find a solution online. Maybe someone here will have a solution.

Some possibilities -

First time it happened I figured a reboot would solve the problem but, not!

A reboot can work wonders, but not miracles.

I'm not sure this will duplicate or assist but:
My 3 external drives are on 24/7, as is my PC, unless I travel or have to reboot. Whenever I do find it necessary to reboot, I always turn off the externals and turn them on after boot has completed. I suspect the update required a reboot - most do. Is it possible things got "out of whack" (very technical term) when rebooting for the update? I run Win 10, Pro 64 bit.

So many people do that, but it just goes against my grain. This computer will not go to sleep, so it's either running all the time, or it turns off when it goes into Sleep mode on its own. I'll have to look into that. I suspect the non-working KVM switch is causing the problem because the other computer connected to it will sleep and wake up, but the monitor doesn't wake up.

The only problem I had was that after one update I lost the sound in my laptop. I had to reload the realtek sound download.

Had the same problem recently. Went into Computer Management/Storage and gave the one drive I had trouble with a new drive letter. From that moment on all was well.

Changing drive letters randomly is a nuisance. That happens if I have a USB device plugged in and then I turn on my external. I have to either reboot or go through Disk Management.

I think that will happen when a different USB port is used. It the USB slot is always the same, the drive letter is preserved. It is possible to assign a specific drive letter to a USB device in disk management. The change of drive letters has been a nuisance for me too, Jerry.

That could very well be.
