I sent my D750 in for the recall on the shutter. The camera was fully functional in mint / new condition, so i thought. I had just used it on an event; no problems that i was aware of. I received a bill for the shutter 0.0 charge initially and then about a week later i received a bill for over 300.00 for impact damage. I called Nikon and told them i sent the camera in because of the recall only and did not have any issues. I packaged the camera according to instructions and specs and told them so. I believe my camera was damaged at the factory, but they don't want to take responsibility, and now i owe them to get my camera back in working condition. If i didn't have so much invested in Nikon i would switch. I spoke with several customer service supervisors and the best they would do is reduce the repair cost and tell me how delicate the camera is.

That's bad! Obviously, it was damaged, but proving it was in good condition when you sent it is probably not possible. Keep us informed.

Yes, I would love to hear how this plays out as I shot Nikon also.

Tell them you did not authorize the repairs, and they should of contacted you prior to any additional service, with an estimate of the costs. also did you insure the shipping of the camera?

In the first place, you did not know there was camera damage. Nikon is honest and if they found damage it is because it is there.
It is not your fault and it is not Nikon fault and I mean the Nikon part of camera repairs. I do not know what damage the camera could have but you are saying the camera was working well so why not keeping using the camera like it is without further cost? Obviously, only if you want to save the new expense.
Knowing what is damaged helps you with your decision.

Unfortunately, this won't help you with your current situation, but for future references: I document the condition using my cell phone including how it was packaged. It's a pain, but it provides some proof of condition before sending. It may be that it was damaged during the delivery process and then you could make an insurance claim. Good luck.

The camera was obviously damaged in shipment or by Nikon. They should have noted the damage when they received it and notified you before they did anything. The package would have certainly shown evidence of abuse and the damage to the camera and if not then, it's obvious Nikon damaged it. You have a fight on your hand because of a dishonest employee or management. I'd raise hell and since they are claiming they received it that way, then you should file a damage report with the carrier and then let the carrier fight it out with Nikon. It's really not on you and Nikon has got to realize this. You are not alone as to someone having trouble with Nikon repair.

Alas! Paul Harvey is gone and we may never hear the rest of the story.

It would be to Nikon's advantage to make a one-time goodwill repair in this case since the circumstances of the damage are in question.

I thought of that, but I could take a picture of my perfect camera, drop and damage it, and then put it into the box.

You could email Nikon Service and tell that that you have posted this situation on UHH, with its 77,500 members, and you've waiting for opinions before making a decision.

That's why I haven't bought any protection plans and haven't spent more than $380 on any used Nikon DSLR. I still have and use my J1, my D3100, my D200, and my D7000. I haven't had any fail on me, and they have ranged in price on ebay from top rated sellers from $80 to $380. If one did fail I would just throw it out. Same is true for about a dozen used lenses, none of which cost more than $250. I don't mind being 5 to 10 years behind the technology curve.
