I suppose grandads can be a pain with their camera sometimes! I rather like the image - any suggestions on how I might have done it better?

Well, I don't know. Maybe you could have asked her if it was okay to take her picture. It does tell a story. The girl didn't want you to take her picture.

Maybe get the hand upright, sort of a prison cell bars effect.

Use the prospective tool to make the room normal. Crop left tight to hand , yes with a bit of space to border. Crop right almost to the shoulder. color the ceiling the same as the walls. In PSP X9 I clicked on smart fix and the whole photo was brightened.. it needed it.

yes, and I did a mod and removed a lot of things. Reducing the photo to a simple message with minimal elements is the way to go. I did a quick "can you save" on this one and sent to the OP.
