That is a hooded eyepiece that is designed to cover the eye in such a way that light doesn't get in from the sides when you are viewing through the eyepiece. It was most likely made by Hoodman and is an accessory that costs between 20 to 30 dollars. I have one on my D800 and they work very well.

The one shown is for glasses; covers the entire lens. There's a much smaller one for without glasses.

OK, thanks for the clarification. I do wear glasses but I take them off when using the camera. But then I have to put them back on to view what I have taken on the rear LCD screen.

I wear glasses, so I use the larger one. But I have had friends without glasses, use my camera, and they love it.

I use one of those eye cups and I like it because I wear glasses for reading and to see the monitor on the back of the camera and with the eye Cup on it can push my glasses down out of the way when I want to take a picture in a hurry!
