As I just happen to own both lenses I will tell you. I purchased the Tamron lens first then a few years later acquired the Canon lens. The Canon lens is dust and moisture resistant and has better optics, but then it is an L series lens. For the money though, the major difference is, one lens is black and one is white with a sexy red band. The Tamron is up against tough competition as the Canon lens is one of their most popular lenses but, the Tamron is a darn good lens. There are several you tube videos that compare the two lenses. The Canon always comes out on top but for the money, it's hard to beat the Tamron. On a scale of 1 to 100, the Canon is a 100 and the Tamron a solid 95. There are those who sware the Tamron is better than the Canon but I'm pretty sure those people either shoot Nikon (I too own Nikon gear) or just can't afford the Canon. If it comes down to a tight budget, go for the Tamron. I still use mine quite often.

Price and ruggedness in the Canon model which is one of Canon's unbelievable lenses.

The Tamron vs the Canon (Not the new version) has articles showing Tamron was better. Don't know about the newest Canon version. I have the Tamron for that reason and is fine. The Canon L lens is a great rouged lens/

The newest version of the 70-200 2.8L is the version II.
The Tamron is marginally better in some areas but overall, the Canon comes out on top.
For the money, the Tamron can't be beat.

I own the Canon lens. It's well worth the money. Tamron is ok, but you get what you pay for. I'd even buy a used Canon copy over a new Tamron.

I have the Canon version and I am very happy with it. Even when using the version III Tele Convertors.
It may cost a little more but I suspect it will hold its value better for resale. But I don't plan to sell it anytime soon!

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I am not a Canon user but when a professional lens is designed by a manufacturer for its cameras we are talking as the best that could be for that specific camera.
Independent lenses offer very good image quality but there must be a reason why those lenses are cheaper. All of my lenses are manufactured by the same camera manufacturer, the only exception is my mirrorless Olympus bodies that I use with Panasonic lenses because both companies work together.
If I was in need of a 70-200 AF lens Nikon would be my first choice. If budget was an issue then an independent lens maker would be the solution.

Tony Northrups 70-200 comparisons showed the Tamron being less than 200mm at the long end. - I think he stated it was around 180mm actual FOV vs the Canon that was a tad more than 200mm. He has a youtube video on the comparisons.

I have the Tamron and am very pleased with it. Use it on my 7DII and really love it on my 5D....It's a great lens at a better price than the Canon. Great results....I watched Tony Northrups review and others before purchasing...Tamron for the price is your best deal....
