Great Smoky Mountains National Park
My wife and I are going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for a week with another couple.
Gatlinburg is the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I've been doing some
studying on the area and it appears to be a photographer's wonderland! I'm looking
forward to exploring the park.
There is always the problem of balancing the urge (the need?) to do photography with the
necessity of also being social and spending some time with the non-photographers
(3 of them) in the group!

Definitely! If one of those three people is overly sensitive to your photography, that will make it even more difficult. When you're out with the group, shoot. When there is a lull - downtime - go out for a short time shooting. I know what that situation is like, whether it cameras, cars, computers, or anything else you enjoy.
Cades Cove!!!! Even the "nons" will enjoy the drive and the history!
Thanks, "deer2ker"- I have Cades Cove on the list!
Most anywhere you go there will be shooting territory. Lots of waterfalls to check out, so suss them out ahead of time so you don't miss them!
Most folks don't roll out of bed for sunrise. Do that, drive off to a location you scouted the day before, and when you get back, make coffee for the others. Mornings, especially if they are misty as they often are, are magical in the Smokies. Have a great trip and share some shots when you get back.
I love waterfalls, and I've made a list.
We're taking two cars, so that allows me to go off on my own some days.
You didn't say when you are going on your trip, but if it is in the Fall, you should expect lots of company. The leaf-peepers are there in droves. Otherwise, there are many vistas, waterfalls, etc. to enjoy. Wonderful photo-ops! The parkway is 45 mph and no commercial trucks! 👍 Even the tunnels are interesting. Be prepared for weather. Enjoy!

I can't imagine even a non- photographer person, would not take any pics in such a beautiful area. If you have an extra camera or 2, give them to your party and have them spray and pray. Tell them that we might have a prize winner in the batch. Make it a game, if you will, but try to get those in your party to partake in the hunt!
go to cataloochee and see the elk.... took these with phone...

The Tremont area has spectacular rapids - particularly in fall. When are you going?
We'll be there the last week in August- slightly into September.
The little women & I visited in 2015. As a matter of fact, we drove to New York, Vermont, Then down to the Great Smokie Mountains from CA. One of the best vacations we have ever had. It is beautiful in the early fall. You'll also be close to Dollywood. Have a great trip and take lots of pictures
Thanks, I'm really looking forward to it. It would be wonderful to visit in the autumn sometime.
Just came back from a stay in Gatlinburg. Be prepared for horrendous traffic jams and crowds and crowds of people. The three cities, Sieverville, Pigeon Gorge, and Gatlinburg are Super over-commercialized now to nauseousness for me. To quote Yogi Berra, it's so crowded nobody goes there anymore.
I would stay in Townsend as my base and avoid Gatlinburg.
