My annual post at Carnival. Jab-jabs (mispronouncd French for 'devil') covered in oil and charcoal, with the occasional painted jab, parade menacingy but cheerfully from about 4 a.m. Photography is not easy - you have no freedom of movement, because the crowd is so dense that if you picked your feet off the ground, you would not fall - except that most are covered with black oil, so you slither onto an oily road and then keep slithering. How do you expose for shiny black in the intense rising sun, where subjects pass from blinding light to deep shade in a flash? Constant photobombing, and people walking in front of the subject you've been tracking. These, then are my excuses! It's fast and furious, and exhilerating. And, this being Grenada, absolutely safe and welcoming. Cameras, fortunately, are off-limits for those wanting to share their colour with you. Today is 'Pretty Mas' with all the colourful costumes - but you know what that looks like.
Some silver Jabs fly in from Trinidad every year

Many want their picture taken. Posing them is impossible in the noise (!) and turmoil.

Looks menacing, but isn't, though some have imbibed a lot!

Not sure how they keep the paint etc. out of their eyes.

Washing off afterwards. Except that the oil does not dissolve, but at least it cools you down!

Thanks, both! It's sometng I wouldn't miss for the world.
Thank you for posting these amazing photos. Looks like a fantastic event.
The lady with the white hair is my favorite. Excellent composition, great shot! Good framing!
Great shots. Our cruise ships was arriving at St. Thomas as one of those festivals was in full swing. Wild!

Terrific photos of a truly unique (if not odd) phenomenon!
Fascinating and Chaotic and what fun! Your shots show a bit of everything and well done, especially knowing how difficult these street scenes may be to get!
Absolutely fantastic shots, Lingen! I've never seen anything like this and I really enjoyed looking at them!
