Thanks. Good to know. I have TV, computer, and phone through the cable company. If I drop one feature, I lose the discount, so any savings could evaporate.

Now the it is more popular the price of the equipment has come down. I believe I paid 100-150 at that time. But it has paid for itself many times over...
Jerry, I have had Ooma for over five years, maybe ten. Time flies.... I pay the local and federal taxes, about $3.50 to 4.00 per month plus their premium fee which is 9.95 per month. This is paid once per year. You do not have to subscribe to this premium service. I don't like bundles. One feature Ooma has if the internet goes down all calls are forwarded to your cell. You get two lines. You have a web page you can go to and black list numbers that have called you on there premium service. I have not purchased their Telo phone set. Just use a cordless set with 4 phones. You have to by the base. It does have an answering machine. Easy to set up. I would recommend it. Review info on internet. Yes, it is VOIP and will not work if the internet goes down but if you have a cell you won't miss any calls..
I've used Magic Jack for 7 years, and have had no problem's with it. One annual fee, of $35. Voice quality is excellent. I'd read the comment section on OOMA, and also on Magic Jack before you purchase either service. I've never had need to use Magic Jack's customer service, but I am told it also is near non-existant.
Jerry,
I have an OBI200. (OBItalk) I bought this about two years ago for less than 50 bucks. I have not paid a dime since for phone service. It connects to your router and works great as long as you have internet service. No annual fee. Check Amazon for information and prices.
Tom...
I have used Ooma in both the US and in Mexico. It has worked well in both places even though in Mexico my average upload speed to the internet was .5 MPS. Prior to Ooma, I had used Vonage, Skype, and Magic Jack. Ooma, by far was the best. Their software allows it to be used with very low internet speeds. Their voice mail has been great-forwards all voice mails to multiple cell phones and gives "voice to text" service. I do not subscribe to their "premier service" so pay only taxes on my calls which averages about $1-2 per month which is autopaid through a credit card.
Originally I bought a refurbished model through Amazon for $69. Ooma gets my vote.

Thanks Tom. I wasn't planning on changing my phone service, but I checked it out, and it's just $60 (plus change) now, and it does have the best reviews, and also from what I can ascertain, it'sthe least expensive system...maybe it's time for me to change to OB1200!

I've had ooma for years. It cost $100-200 for the box, a few more dollars to transfer our number from Pacific Bell. We'd been paying Bell $60 a month. Now our charges are just Federal taxes, about $5-10 a month. There are other services they'd like to sell you, but I've never bitten. Sound quality is at least as good as Bell, and the only outages we've had is when the cable goes down. Over the last few years, that has been rare.
Jerry, I've been using the Ooma Telo as a second line for about a year. I have had no problems with it at all. I do not subscribe to their services, so I don't have all the "goodies" like call waiting and call forwarding, but I have unlimited long distance in the US and Canada and it costs me $3 and change a month in taxes. I have all the bells and whistles on our primary line through our cable provider, but not long distance. It is cheaper to pay the $3 a month for a second line with long distance from Ooma than to upgrade the primary line with long distance service.

We have had it for several years also and have had the same positive experience. When we are travelling, we are able to access our messages remotely via the internet. Just love it!
Have had Ooma for several years. Once you purchase base unit the only cost is monthly taxes, usually $3-4 per month. I also purchase their premium service although this is optional. I use my own three unit phone system, not necessary to purchase one from Ooma. Have had no problems.
