The Angry Photographer Announces His Final "Must Buy" Nikkor Lens
Aug 12, 2017 14:09:11   #
russraman Loc: New York City

After producing more than 4,000 YouTube videos -- most of which focus on Nikon cameras and lens reviews -- Angry Photographer Ken Wheeler has produced his last "secret must buy" lens video for Nikon shooters. In the past his "must buy" lens videos have included classic Nikkor lenses such as the 60mm f2.8D, 135mm f2.8 Ai-S, 50mm f1.8 Ai pancake, 200mm f4 Ai, 105mm f2.5 Ai-S, 300mm f4.5 Ai-S ED IF as well as the Tokina 100mm f2.8 Macro AT-X Pro D. His last "must buy" video is for the Nikkor 105mm f1.8 Ai-S, which can be viewed at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qHSOw7nqzTg. Has anyone owned or used this lens that dates back to the mid-to-late 1980's? If so, what is your impression of it?

He's not one of my favorites.

Is Wheeler retiring? If not, I doubt it is truly his last "must buy" recommendation.

The Angry Photographer has some degree of credibility-but he rambles and repeats himself incessantly.

The Angry Photographer might ramble at times, that is true. I have purchased a few of his "must buy" lenses in recent months and I have found his reviews to be pretty good.
The Nikon 135mm 2.8 (though I ended up with the 3.5 version) is a wonderful lens that I would stack up against pretty much any lens I own and I bought that
for under $150. A friend recently bought the 200mm F4 and loves it as well. Ken can be tough to handle in some videos, but he does seem to know what he's
talking about when it comes to lenses.

Have I shared all his experiences with lenses, no, but close enough that I listen when he offers advice on lenses. He turned me on to the Voigtlander lenses and I
love them. I never would have bought one without Ken's advice. He has saved me a lot of money in the past year in deciding what lenses to purchase and if you listen
to him, that's his goal, to offer advice in saving money on lenses. Personally, I have found his advice to be more useful than anyone else on YouTube when it comes to lens advice.
Dustin Abbott would be a close second. I think he offers fair lens critiques.

I agree, and I will continue to watch his videos.
Perhaps, I am not patient; but I go a little nuts waiting for him to finish.

The 105mm f2.5 is a great lens more reasonably priced.

LOL, it's why I sometimes hit the fast forward button. I'm not always the most patient either.
As far as the Nikon 105 F2.5, I would agree. It's a great lens that I picked up for about $150 too.
This is a test image from the 135 f3.5 shot at 3.5 and ISO 100. Its tough to beat for a lens I think I paid $130 and is in mint condition.

I first became aware of the Angry Photographer shortly after I purchased a Nikon Df in late 2014 and fell back in love with photography. Since this was my first full-frame DSLR, I immediately experienced major GAS attacks and started building-up my lens collection. In addition to being educational and entertaining, The Angry Photographer reviews are also aimed at helping his viewers avoid disappointment in their gear purchases as well as get the best value for their money.

The Angry Photographer also steered me into the woderful world of vintage AI and Ai-S manual focus Nikkor lenses circa 1980 through 1990, which while mostly discontinued, are built to last with metal and made in Japan ... and are in many ways superior to their modern-day counterparts. Over the past two+ years I've found his reviews (although somewhat repetitive) to be honest, accurate and reliable.

The only downside for me is that his videos have cost me at lot of money... but never a disappointment in my gear purchases that he recommended.

I know the feeling. He's cost me thousands too :)

And Garth Brooks is-once again....for the 5th, or 6th, time...cutting his last ever record, going on his last ever tour, and then retiring from the life forever. Sure. Most of what T.A.P. says seems to be useful enough, but his manner of saying it is sometimes annoying. I occasionally view his stuff, but he is never the first source I check on anything. He does have a nice lens collection.

Maybe he is angry because he chose Nikon? Just a guess.
