I used to love eating the hottest I could find. Now my stomach says "No!" to the hottest. Have had to cut back to a few jalapeños per day. I do make my own hot sauce. I like it to sit in the refrigerator a few days. After about 4 days it is just right for me. The longer it sits the "hotter" it gets.

The older I get the more I like hot sauce. I think the taste buds need more flavor to excite them. My favorite hot sauce is Franks. It is I believe the sauce used to make the original Buffalo hot wings. Surprising that upstate New York would produce such a good hot sauce. Franks is not just hot it has a flavor that makes it special. I have lived in my RV in all the lower 48 states for the last 9 years. I have had a lot of different hot sauces in different areas of the country and Franks is still my favorite. Tabasco makes a quality product (yes I have been to the factory) but Franks is my pick.

Yes. When the Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen did their blind taste test of hot sauces which made Franks one of their two favorites they said that as soon as the testers tried it they immediately recognized the flavor of Franks.

We have at least a dozen different hot sauces in our house. Three different kinds of Tabasco (regular, reserve, made with ETOH vs. wood alcohol and hot and spicy). Our favorite is Tiger Sauce, a lot more flavor than heat. At last count, we had three bottles of Tiger sauce!

The Louisiana brand hot sauce is good, not as hot as Tabasco, still adds some heat. Some sauces are hot early and some linger and are hot later. Mix of two is usually great, IMO.

I don't know who was first, it's going to take some experimentation to find your favorite, enjoy.

Would someone clue me in as to what brand is the "original"? In the stores I shop there are two or more brands making the claim. I don't want to buy a bottle of each to see which one I like the best, as it would be wasteful. More than likely all are good. I just want my curiosity to be satisfied.

If you have made a decision that they are, "More than likely all are good." just what are you trying to satisfy your curiosity about/with?

Your curiosity is seems to be strictly Quote:"what brand is the "original". Can't answer that without knowing what brands you have raised your curiosity about.

When all else fails Google the question. My interpretation of "original" is what brand/company produced the first "Louisiana" hot sauce. The Crystal brand first started in 1923; the Louisiana Hot Sauce brand (in the narrow bottle) first appeared in 1928. So, based on my definition of "original" the Crystal brand is it. I only found references to those two. There very well could be others. I really was not interested in which one tastes best as that is a subjective determination. Anyway, I doubt that either one tastes exactly the same as it did in the early years - FDA requirements, etc.
